Germany Open Up in Style

It was a stunning performance from Silvia Neid's side on Sunday as they left all spectating in little doubt as to how good an outfit they are.

Sasic opened the scoring with a tap-in inside three minutes and completed her treble just after the half-hour. Mittag's hat-trick goal came in the 64th minute as she capitalised on a defensive mistake from the African side and ran through on goal to finish cooly under the goalkeeper.

Germany's other scorers were Simone Laudehr, Sara Dabritz, Melanie Behringer and Alexandra Popp. Defensively, Cote d'Ivoire were poor, the tournament debutants simply unable to handle their opponents' pace and movement in attack.

As noted by Sky Germany's Jan Aage Fjortoft, the performance evoked that of the German men's side in 2014 as they routed Brazil 7-1 on their way to World Cup glory:

Neid and her team will hope their opening performance bodes well as they aim to pick up an unprecedented third Women's World Cup.

They will have tougher tests—Norway are next up Thursday—but it was certainly a fine performance and sent out a significant message to the competition about the German side's ambition.

USA Kick Off Against Australia

Perhaps Germany's biggest contenders for this year's World Cup crown are the USA, who get their tournament going against Australia in Winnipeg on Monday.

Group D has been named this year's "Group of Death," with USA, Australia and Sweden all top-10 ranked sides and Nigeria the highest-placed African team, per FIFA.

A strong start will be necessary for the USWNT in order to avoid any nervous moments, but the Matildas will not be easily turned over.

However, the USA have never been beaten by the Aussies and are clearly raring to go, with defender Becky Sauerbrunn eager for the campaign to start, per U.S. Soccer WNT:

USA are, like Germany, two-time previous winners of the Women's World Cup, but they have missed out in the last three tournaments, most recently losing the 2011 final on penalties to Japan.

Such a barren spell will no doubt drive them this year, especially the more experienced of the team, like Hope Solo and Abby Wambach.

Monday's match against Australia will be an opportunity for the U.S. to lay down an early marker and prove that they have what it takes to win a third World Cup.
