Germany Women's Soccer Roster 2015: Starting XI and Top Reserve Players

Rory MarsdenJun 6, 2015

Germany will have genuine designs on winning the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada, having missed out four years ago when they hosted the tournament.

In 2011, they were shocked at the quarter-final stage by eventual winners Japan and, thus, failed to add to their two World Cup wins from 2003 and 2007.

Per FIFA, they are currently ranked as the world's No. 1 team, the Germans are the favourites for this year's competition, along with the USA.

Nadine Angerer, Goalkeeper

The leader of the German team and one of the most experienced goalkeepers around, 36-year-old Nadine Angerer is a veteran of four previous World Cups and a two-time winner.

Her influence as the German captain will be key as Silvia Neid's side look to live up to their top ranking and try to emulate their male counterparts with a World Cup win.

Angerer is extremely confident in her side's abilities, and she has every right to be, per Reuters (h/t Indian outlet dna): "Our team is outstanding, we have immense potential and the necessary quality to go very far in this tournament. We only have this aim in our sights and everything else is secondary."

Even in the absence of 2014 Ballon d'Or winner Nadine Kessler—absent through a knee injury, per German outlet DW—the German side have strength in depth throughout.

With a good many youngsters in the side, Angerer will be a definite starter, and her influence and experience could prove telling at the key moments.

Anja Mittag, Forward

Anja Mittag is a goal machine. She netted 11 times in 10 games in Germany's perfect qualifying campaign, in which they scored 62 goals overall, conceding just four.

Mittag can play on the flank, in a playmaking role or as an out-and-out striker, and she is an absolute terror for opposition defences.

A recent signing of Paris Saint-Germain, she is a consistent goalscorer at the club level also, per UEFA's Paul Saffer:

Her terrific experience of scoring crucial goals at both the club and the international level—she netted the winner in the Euro 2013 final—will make her a key part of Neid's starting XI.

In the absence of Kessler, and also the pregnant Fatmire Alushi, per BBC Sport, much of the creative onus will fall to Mittag. She has both the skill and the determination to step up to the plate, and the 30-year-old is a genuine contender for the Golden Boot.

Dzsenifer Marozsan, Midfielder

Midfield star Dzsenifer Marozsan may be forced to make her impact from the bench at the 2015 World Cup with reports suggesting she may not be fit.

Germany kick off their campaign against the Ivory Coast on Sunday, but reports from the Die Nationalelf camp suggest she is a doubt for the Ottawa match—another big blow, per football writer Jeff Kassouf:

The 23-year-old is a supreme talent and a wonderful playmaker, able to pick out key passes and create chances from nowhere.

Her impact from the bench could be devastating against potentially tiring defences, as her imaginative play is very difficult to predict.

Marozsan is just one among many terrific German players, but her impact could be vital, and Neid will be hoping she is fully fit for the latter stages of the tournament.
