Women's World Cup Schedule 2015: Groups, Fixtures, Live Stream Info and Odds

Rory MarsdenJun 5, 2015

Hosts Canada will hope to get off to a flying start against China on Saturday when they open the 2015 Women's World Cup in Edmonton.

The Commonwealth Stadium clash will be the curtain-raiser for a month's worth of action, with this year's competition, arguably, the most hotly anticipated in the history of the women's game.

The expanded format includes 24 teams, eight of whom have never appeared at a World Cup before, and such is the quality on show that there are a swathe of potential winners.

USA Narrow Favourites

The traditional powerhouses of women's football—the USA and Germany—have history on their side ahead of the 2015 tournament having both won two World Cups already.

They are the leading pair with the bookmakers, although top-ranked Germany are actually second favourites to world No. 2 USA, per FIFA.

However, in Canada in 2015, it is by no means a toss-up between the pair as to who will be crowned World Cup winners.

The quality on show is immense. Reigning champions Japan—who shocked USA in 2011's final, beating Germany on the way—are certainly in with a chance of successfully defending their title.

They have a relatively simple task in Group C as they face a trio of World Cup debutants in Switzerland, Cameroon and Ecuador.

The same cannot be said for the USA, whose group was labelled with the obligatory fatal moniker after the draw back in December:

There is no getting away from the fact that Australia, Sweden and Nigeria all pose a serious challenge to Jill Ellis' USWNT in the first stage of the tournament.

Sweden and Nigeria both have bags of experience, per ESPN's Paul Carr, while Australia are the 10th-ranked team in the world:

For Germany, their toughest challenge could well come in the quarter-finals, when they may face up to a hugely talented French side.

France breezed through qualifying and are a technically excellent side. They are also made up of a multitude of players from French league sides Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon, meaning they have a terrific understanding of each others' play.

The French are the favourites to top Group F, but England may have something to say about that, with Mark Sampson's team having won all 10 of their qualifying games while conceding just once and scoring 52 goals.

The competition is going to be fierce at the 2015 Women's World Cup, and hosts Canada should not be discounted from lifting the trophy either.

It is the biggest tournament of its type to be staged, and based on the teams involved, it could well be the best.
