Michael Onwenu to Michigan: Wolverines Land 4-Star OG Prospect
Head coach Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines bolstered their offensive line on Tuesday night, receiving a commitment from 4-star offensive lineman Michael Onwenu.
Onwenu announced the news on Twitter:
"Happy to announce I've just committed to the University Of Michigan 〽️
— Michael Onwenu (@_MXKEY) June 3, 2015"
Onwenu is a 4-star offensive tackle, per 247Sports' composite rankings, coming in as the No. 185 prospect in the country, the No. 7 guard and the No. 6 player from the state of Michigan. The Cass Technical product out of Detroit is certainly a physical presence, measuring in at 6'3" and weighing 365 pounds.
His coach at Cass Tech, Tom Wilcher, had nothing but praise for him, per Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports:
"“They’re getting a thick, fast, quick aggressive kid,” Wilcher said. He’s produced over 20 power-five recruits. “Strong, good blocker, has great leverage.
“We’ve never had a kid like him before. Never had a kid like that. That’s a gift to have a kid that big that can move and run. You don’t have kids like him all the time that can do that. He’s low contact, to the ground, good pad level, quick, can run outside zone, sweeps, he can play guard, he can play tackle, it’s hard to find kids like that. We’ve never had a kid at our school with his height, weight and his size.”
"
Onwenu is the sort of big, physical, mauling presence who seems tailor-made for Harbaugh's power-running system. The seventh recruit for Harbaugh in the 2016 class, Onwenu seems to embody what Harbaugh is looking to build at Michigan.
Much like at Stanford and with the San Francisco 49ers, the Wolverines will likely return to a run-first, play-action passing offense. With Onwenu joining the ranks in 2016, the program appears to have added a player who will thrive in that scheme.
