Gianni VerschuerenJun 5, 2015

The 2015 women's World Cup will kick off on Saturday, June 6, as hosts Canada face China at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. But before a ball is kicked, fans will get to enjoy the traditional opening ceremony, set to begin at 5:40 p.m. ET; it is available to fans thanks to Fox Sports' live stream service and the BBC Sport website.

Grammy Award winner Sarah McLachlan and Juno award winners Tegan and Sara will be among the many performers, per FIFA's official website, with kick-off to the opening match expected immediately after the end of the show.

Here's everything you need to know about Saturday's opening ceremony.

Date: Saturday, June 6

Time: 5:40 p.m. ET

Venue: Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton, Canada

TV info: The opening ceremony and match will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 (for U.S. viewers).

FIFA have done their very best to reveal as little as possible about the upcoming opening ceremony, other than revealing the names of the biggest artists that will participate.

McLachlan, who dedicated one of her songs to Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, spoke to the organisation's official website about what it means to perform at such an event:

"

I’m honoured to be a part of the Opening Ceremony of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.  This will be a great opportunity for me to perform “In Your Shoes”, a song that was inspired by Malala Yousafzai’s incredible story and her strength of character to stand up to what she believed in. As the mother of two daughters, it’s important to have strong female role models for young girls and we are so fortunate right here in Canada to have such an accomplished group of athletes on our Canadian team who inspire us all.

"

Musical duo Tegan and Sara announced their participation through YouTube:

Tegan and Sara are originally from Alberta, so they'll have the opportunity to play in front of their own fans.

Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium will host a total of 11 matches, including a semi-final. The final of the 2015 women's World Cup will be played in Vancouver.

Hosts Canada will like their chances against a young China team in the opening match, as the 1999 runners-up failed to qualify for the tournament in 2011 and have elected to travel to Edmonton with plenty of fresh faces in the squad.

As shared by TSN's Luke Wileman, star striker Yang Li did not travel to Canada and will miss the tournament due to an injury:

Christine Sinclair is Canada's biggest star, and she'll be anxious to erase the memories of 2011, where a broken nose severely hindered her performance. Canada have never made it past the semi-finals, but this year's tournament could be different.

Much has been made of FIFA's decision to play the 2015 women's World Cup on artificial turf, per the Associated Press (via the Guardian), and unlike their opponents, the Canadian team has plenty of experience playing on the surface.

Both teams are expected to advance from Group A, with debutants the Netherlands and New Zealand, who have never made it past the group stage, playing later on Saturday.
