Notable Day 3 Predictions

Leonardo Mayer vs. Jiri Vesely

Seeded at No. 24 in the French Open rankings, Leonardo Mayer is far from the most prestigious name contending in the men's singles Tuesday, but that's part of what makes his meeting with Jiri Vesely so enticing.

The Argentine lost to Dominic Thiem in the final of last week's Open de Nice Cote d'Azur, and there's no guarantee this week's 21-year-old foe will be much of a step down in terms of quality.

At 6'6", Vesely even dwarfs the not-so insignificant frame of Mayer and will be hoping to take control of service matters from the beginning, one facet of the game in which he tends to excel.

Despite being so young in age, Vesely not so long ago joined an elite list of ATP players, according to tennis writer Chris Goldsmith:

One might look upon the Day 3 fixture as an unlikable one for both competitors, which in a way only makes the clash that much more enticing and the prize of a second-round place so much more valuable.

Following his fall at the hands of Thiem not even a week ago, Mayer may still be fighting for full mental preparedness, while a nothing-to-lose attitude could do the trick for his opponent.

Prediction: Vesely wins in four sets.

Eugenie Bouchard vs. Kristina Mladenovic

A clash of French speakers will see Montreal-born Eugenie Bouchard pitted against Kristina Mladenovic on Day 3, where the victor will claim the coveted reward of a place in the competition's second round.

Mladenovic may well feel upbeat regarding her chances against the out-of-form Bouchard, who has lost seven of her last eight matches, but the 21-year-old confessed to Mark Masters of TSN that she has "no expectations" for the week ahead:

"

I feel, recently, I have done better on the practice court and it's slowly starting to translate onto the match court. It's not quite where I want it to be, of course, but I've taken steps in the right direction recently and, at the end of the day, all I really want to do is improve. Hopefully I can show that more on the match court and take one baby step at a time.

I'm expecting the crowd to be against me, which is fine. I like the challenge of that. I know that she can have some big weapons and some big shots and she'll probably be pretty energized with that crowd behind her. I'm just going to go out there and go for it.

"

The home advantage Bouchard acknowledges will run in her opponent's favour may come to be a pivotal factor, perhaps gifting Mladenovic a useful edge for her first-round encounter.

Her WTA ranking of No. 44 may not be a tremendously daunting one, but Mladenovic did have a fruitful run in Strasbourg earlier this month, just losing out to Samantha Stosur in the final of that competition.

Should form count for anything, it may be the French native who seals her progress to the next round, but Bouchard's quality makes her capable of pulling something out of the bag.

Prediction: Bouchard win in three sets.

Novak Djokovic vs. Jarkko Nieminen

MONTE-CARLO, MONACO - MAY 19: Formula One driver Felipe Massa (left) and tennis player Novak Djokovic (right) before the 22nd World Stars football match at the Stade Louis II in Monaco, before the Formula One Grand Prix at Circuit de Monaco on May 19, 2

Tuesday finally brings the turn of Novak Djokovic to take to the stage of Roland Garros, where he'll begin his campaign to strip Rafael Nadal of his French Open title with a first-round match against Jarkko Nieminen.

On paper, it by all means looks like a mismatch of terrific proportions, but This Day In Tennis raised a French Open memory that will certainly give the Finnish underdog some hope:

That being said, a decade-old victory over Andre Agassi is of little use unless Nieminen can summon up the same indomitable courage that led him to clinch that result so many years ago.

Overcoming Djokovic's assault will be no easy task, and Djokovic even told France 24 that he's a superior athlete to the one of last year, spelling disaster for his first-round foe:

The pledge to live up to his billing as top seed is one Djokovic has undertaken so many times before now, and it's almost impossible to see the Serbian slipping up so prematurely.

Prediction: Djokovic wins in straight sets.
