Mark Fox, Georgia Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldMay 20, 2015

Georgia men's head basketball coach Mark Fox announced Wednesday that he's agreed to a contract extension with a raise to stay in Athens for the foreseeable future.

Fox explained that if he has his way, he'll never give up his current job as long as the Bulldogs will have him.

"I feel like Georgia, it's a destination," Fox said, per the Athens Banner-Herald's Marc Weiszer. "Georgia is a place that has a football and athletic tradition as great as anybody. There's no reason we can't ultimately have that in basketball. It just takes time to do that year after year after year. I never want to leave."

On May 22, ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported "this deal will extend through the 2019-20 campaign and will pay him $2 million annually in addition to a $150,000 per year longevity bonus, which he would collect in 2020."

After a rather successful coaching tenure at Nevada, where he oversaw the development of players such as Nick Fazekas and current NBA guard Ramon Sessions, Fox went to Georgia in 2009.

Three of Fox's first four seasons in Athens resulted in sub-.500 records, yet the Bulldogs brass showed patience with him. It's paid off over the past two years, as he has guided Georgia to the NIT and the NCAA tournament.

This marks the second extension Fox has signed in less than a year, so he's clearly doing something right. The Bulldogs put up a strong fight in losing to Michigan State 70-63 in the second round of March Madness, which looked a lot better when the Spartans went on to the Final Four.

Impressive as Georgia's 21 wins were this past season, its losses to Michigan State and powerhouse Kentucky by a score of 72-64 in the penultimate regular-season contest stand out most. It's a testament to the job Fox has done building the Bulldogs program, and he'll be afforded the opportunity to use that momentum as a springboard for many years to come.
