Chris Conley to Kansas City Chiefs: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Kristopher KnoxMay 1, 2015

Even though the Kansas City Chiefs didn't have a single wide receiver haul in a touchdown pass in 2015, the team decided to bypass the position in the first two rounds of this weekend's draft.

The Chiefs finally settled on a wideout in Round 3, however, and it appears like they got a good one.

Former Georgia wide receiver Chris Conley wasn't exactly the most productive player in 2014 (657 yards and eight touchdowns), but he plays hard and has a number of skills that should translate well to the NFL.

At 6'2" and 213 pounds, Conley has the size and build that NFL teams desire in a pro receiver. He has the ability to high point the football and is a smooth, if not polished route-runner.

Bleacher Report Lead NFL Draft Analyst Matt Miller wrote the following of Conley in his pre-draft analysis:

"

Chris Conley blew up on the scene at the Combine and made everyone take notice. Conley posted eye-popping numbers in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical and broad jumps. That shows up on film, too, where he’s a silky smooth route runner who can accelerate in a hurry to blow past cornerbacks. He destroys a cushion off the line and cornerbacks will demand help over the top when facing him in man coverage. Conley has long arms and uses his hands to get the ball out of the air. You won’t see him let the ball get into his frame or bounce off his pads. Conley is a high character player with no concerns.

"

Conley did indeed impress at the scouting combine, producing a 4.35-second 40-yard dash, 18 reps on the 225-pound bench press and an incredible 139-inch broad jump.

Conley's broad jump, along with a 45-inch vertical jump, set combine records for a wide receiver.

There is a little bit of a risk with Conley, because 2014 was his only standout season with Georgia and because stellar combine numbers don't always translate to NFL ability. However, he has enough physical potential to warrant an early third-round selection.

If Conley can adapt quickly to the pro game, he can step in and be at least a part-time complement to recently acquired receiver Jeremy Maclin. He can stretch the field with his speed and be at least a rotational player.

The Chiefs were so enamored with Conley's potential, in fact, that they traded up in the third round in order to make sure they got him. The team traded the 80th and the 193rd overall selections to the Minnesota Vikings in order to move up to pick No. 76.

This put the Chiefs in front of the Cleveland Browns, who may have had an interest in taking him there. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Browns did meet with Conley just before the draft.

Thanks to the trade, the Chiefs got their man and may have gotten a new starter for the coming season in the process.
