Chivas vs. America: Score and Reaction for 2015 El Super Clasico

Joseph ZuckerApr 26, 2015

Club America and Chivas Guadalajara played to a 1-1 draw Sunday evening in the Estadio Omnilife, adding another entry to the legendary rivalry.

Although Chivas entered Sunday's match higher up in the Clausura table, they have firmly lost bragging rights to their rivals. America's Apertura title put them one ahead of Chivas on the all-time list, while Chivas' last Super Clasico victory was back in 2012, per ESPN Tri:

America goalkeeper Moises Munoz feels there isn't any doubt as to which club is superior:

The first half was a rather chippy affair. The two teams combined for seven total shots, nearly half of the amount of fouls in the first 45 minutes (12). Chivas were the guiltier party, accounting for 10 of those fouls.

In a match like this, it often takes a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock. And that's what Paul Aguilar provided for America in the 16th minute.

The 29-year-old right-back got forward in some space and unleashed a vicious right-footed shot that somehow evaded the onrushing Chivas defenders and sneaked under the bar in the top right corner.

Bleacher Report's Karl Matchett provided a great look at the goal:

Goal's Jon Arnold felt you'd be hard-pressed to find a prettier goal from the weekend:

As beautiful as Aguilar's shot was, he certainly lost some points with his celebration. ESPN FC's Cesar Hernandez wasn't a kind grader:

Chivas nearly equalized 10 minutes later. A header from Omar Bravo looked destined for the back of the net, but Munoz made a sprawling save to paw the ball away and keep America ahead.

That was Chivas' best effort from what was a rather lackluster first half. America weren't great themselves, but they deserved their 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Perhaps what Chivas had been missing in the first half was forward Aldo de Nigris. Roughly two minutes after his inclusion into the match, De Nigris provided the equalizer. The 31-year-old displayed great control and patience, faking one defender before moving the ball over to his left foot and firing a shot off of Munoz and into the goal.

Soccer Gods was particularly impressed with his stopping ability:

The goal helped breathe life into the Estadio Omnilife, per ESPN FC's Tom Marshall:

Chivas were unable to build off of De Nigris' equalizer. Neither team came too close to finding a winner, and at the end of the day, a draw is probably the fairest result.

America won't have much time to dwell on the match. They take on the Montreal Impact Wednesday in the final of the CONCACAF Champions League. The Impact earned a 1-1 draw on April 22 inside the Estadio Azteca.

That away goal could be critical in the tie, and it means America can't afford to simply sit back for the entire match.

At the very least, America moved into a Liguilla place, and that's critical with the Clausura wrapping up in two weeks.

Meanwhile, Chivas overtook Veracruz for first in the Clausura table. They're still only four points from falling out of the top eight, so the job isn't done just yet. They should get the necessary points to advance to the Liguilla.
