"The twice-capped Argentina international was attempting to evade a Diego Castro challenge on the right wing when he planted his left foot in the turf, prompting the lower leg to snap, noted Jack Davies of Goal.com. "Early reports suggest Musacchio's ankle bore the brunt of the injury."
In videos of the play in question, Musacchio's ankle appears to have completely snapped backwards, pointing in the wrong direction after he had initially planted his foot into the ground.
The loss of Musacchio, as his season almost assuredly is over, is a big one for Villarreal. The centre-back has made 14 La Liga appearances for the club, scoring an impressive three goals and earning a 7.18 average match rating from WhoScored.com. He's also made five Europa League appearances, notching an assist.
