Henderson Reveals a Desire to Remain with Liverpool

Sunday, March 29

In news that will make the Anfield faithful quite happy, Henderson seems committed to remaining a Red for the foreseeable future.

“I love playing football for Liverpool and I want to be there for many years," Henderson told John Richardson of the Sunday Express. "In terms of my contract I think everybody else will make a big deal of it but for me it’s just letting my agent and the club deal with it.”

Richardson also reported that Henderson has turned down a four-year deal that would have paid him £80,000 a week, but negotiations remain intact between his representatives and the club.

Henderson, 24, has been excellent for Liverpool this season, appearing in 29 Premier League games and scoring five goals while adding seven assists. He's earned a 7.23 average match rating from WhoScored.com in those appearances and has been arguably the team's most indispensable player outside of perhaps only Raheem Sterling.

More importantly, Henderson has emerged as the heir apparent to Steven Gerrard in Liverpool's midfield. The longtime captain and star will be departing for LA Galaxy and the MLS after this season, and Henderson appears to be the player who will step in and attempt to fill those large shoes.

To this point, he's appeared up for the task, or at least as up for that task as any player could be replacing a legend. Liverpool will want to lock him up to a long-term deal sooner rather than later given his importance to the club moving forward.
