Freddy Adu to Kuopion Palloseura: Latest Contract Details and Reaction

Gianni VerschuerenMar 28, 2015

Former USA international and football prodigy Freddy Adu has signed a one-year deal with Finland's Kuopion Palloseura, as reported by the club's official Twitter account:

The 25-year-old forward had been a free agent since late 2014, when Serbian club Jagodina decided not to renew his contract after Adu only made one appearance for the club.

Palloseura play in Finland's top division, the Veikkausliiga, finishing the 2014 season in seventh place. The 2015 season starts in April.

Adu is fast becoming one of the most well-traveled players in the world, having previously played in Ghana, the United States, Portugal, Turkey, Greece, Brazil and Serbia. The Guardian's Nick Ames knows he's now moving to a beautiful part of the world, at the very least:

ESPN's Glen Davis was perhaps a little surprised no MLS teams took a chance on the former star:

ESPN's Paul Carr noted that this would be Adu's 11 club in eight countries in 10 seasons:

Once hailed as one of the biggest talents the sport had ever seen, Adu set several MLS records in 2004, becoming the youngest player to ever appear and score in the league.

Dubbed "the next Pele," via the Daily Telegraph, his career stalled after he moved to Europe to join Benfica, and Adu became one of the best-known examples of the dangers of hyping players too much when they're too young.

To his credit, he has never given up on his dream and continues to fight to resurrect his career:

Adu played in just one match for Jagodina after failing to translate trials with Blackpool and AZ Alkmaar into permanent deals, so the odds of him sticking around with Palloseura are certainly stacked against him.

He will certainly bring some added publicity to a club most will have never heard of, but it remains to be seen how big is on-pitch impact will truly be.
