Martinez Plays Down Lukaku Injury Concerns
Wednesday, July 29
"Rom has been playing a lot of minutes and after the first 25 minutes he was feeling his legs being a little too heavy so we didn't want to take any risks. It is not a problem at all," said Everton manager Roberto Martinez, per Phil Kirkbride of the Liverpool Echo.
The Toffees manager added: "We have a little period before the weekend to make sure he is ready and refreshed and in a way with good volume without being over-worked. It was part of the exercise."
Lukaku picked up the injury during Everton's 2-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park on July 28.
Gerard Deulofeu had already developed a hamstring problem earlier in pre-season, per BBC Sport. After his injury, the loss of Lukaku would be another blow for Everton ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The Belgium international is Martinez's key goalscorer, providing pace, power and a focal point for Everton's attack.
If Lukaku does miss any games, the likes of Arouna Kone and Steven Naismith will need to step up and ensure their colleague isn't missed.
