Westbrook Becomes 7th Player with 10 Triple-Doubles in a Season
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds and 17 assists in Sunday's 93-75 win over the Miami Heat, making him the seventh player since 1985-86 to record 10 or more triple-doubles in a single season, per Sportsnet Stats.
With Thunder forward Kevin Durant sidelined by a foot injury since Feb. 19, Westbrook has recorded eight of those triple-doubles in his last 13 games.
Per ESPN Stats & Info, the 26-year-old guard is the first player since Jason Kidd in 2007-08 to notch 10 triple-doubles in the same season.
Prior to Kidd and Westbrook, the last three players to accomplish this feat were Grant Hill, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, per ESPN Stats & Info.
Westbrook's historic run has put him in some rather impressive company, and he's all but assured of leading the NBA in triple-doubles this year. No other player has produced more than three, heading into Monday night's action, per NBA.com/stats.
In 16 games since the All-Star break, Westbrook is averaging 31.6 points, 9.7 rebounds and 11.3 assists, thrusting himself into the MVP conversation, even though he has already missed 15 games.
Of course, his candidacy will take a huge hit if Oklahoma City can't qualify for the playoffs, which remains a distinct possibility.
The Thunder are currently positioned in the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference, sitting 2.5 games ahead of the Phoenix Suns and three games ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans.
While the lead may seem fairly safe with the Thunder having just 12 games remaining on the schedule, both the Pelicans and Suns figure to return some of their injured players in the coming days.
The Thunder, meanwhile, face the prospect of finishing out the season without Durant and Serge Ibaka, which should leave Westbrook plenty of opportunity to add to his league-leading total of 10 triple-doubles.
