Sunday Recap

Real Madrid's La Liga ambitions took a heavy blow on Sunday at the Camp Nou as they were downed 2-1 by arch-rivals and league-leaders Barcelona.
Earlier in the season, Los Blancos looked to be a shoe-in for the title, but a recent loss of form has seen Barca take the top spot, and Sunday's victory could prove vitally important for Luis Enrique's side.
The game’s opening goal came from an unlikely source as Jeremy Mathieu headed Barca in front in the 19th minute.

Sergio Ramos was culpable for some poor defending, but Mathieu did well to rise and head home his first La Liga goal for the Catalan giants from Lionel Messi’s free-kick.
While Barcelona deserved their lead having started the better, Real responded terrifically to going a goal down, taking control of the game.
They were rewarded just after the half hour as Cristiano Ronaldo poked home from 10 yards after a phenomenal back-heeled assist from Karim Benzema.
The equaliser came just moments after Neymar squandered a glorious chance to double Barca’s lead, but the Brazilian could only put his effort straight at Iker Casillas after Luis Suarez’s excellent cross, per BBC Sport’s Gary Lineker:
Real had the ball in the net again in the first half through Gareth Bale, but it was ruled out for offside.
While the Welshman looked onside as he swept home, Ronaldo looked to be offside as he headed the ball into his teammate’s path to score, per ESPN’s Craig Burley:
Los Blancos were in the ascendancy at the half-time whistle and continued to look the more threatening after the break, but Suarez made it 2-1 to Barcelona in the 56th minute.
The Uruguayan took down Dani Alves’ long ball over the top brilliantly, and coolly swept it past Casillas to put the hosts ahead.
Lionel Messi sent a curling shot wide and Neymar squandered another gilt-edged chance as Barca looked to put the game to bed, but Real's inability to find an equaliser eventually handed the hosts all three points in the end.
Real Sociedad played out a four-goal thriller against Cordoba, La Liga’s bottom club losing three players to red cards as they were downed 3-1.
Aleksandar Pantic was the first to go in the sixth minute, dismissed for taking down last man Imanol Agirretxe, but the visitors then opened the scoring through Florin Andone’s 12th minute header.
The hosts drew level through Agirretxe in the 33rd minute and Chory Castro gave them the lead in the 75th minute.
Cordoba lost their second player when Inigo Lopez was handed his second yellow card nine minutes from time, Alfreo Finnbogason then sealing the victory in stoppage time to continue La Real’s terrific recent form, per Spanish football writer Sid Lowe:
Daniel Pinillos compounded Cordoba’s misery further as he was dismissed in the third minute of stoppage time, and Los Califas stay bottom of the league, seven points from safety.
Sevilla moved to within four points of fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with an excellent 2-0 away win at Villarreal.
Just days after knocking Villarreal out of the Europa League—Sevilla won both legs in a 5-2 aggregate win—Coke and Vitolo’s second half goals proved the difference for the visitors at the Madrigal.
Coke swept home four minutes after the break before Vitolo’s excellent 65th minute volley, his terrific form continuing, per Opta:
Deportivo La Coruna continued their winless streak in Sunday’s other match as they drew 0-0 with Espanyol at home, their sixth league game on the bounce without a victory.
Saturday Recap

La Liga champions Atletico Madrid kept their title challenge on course with a mandatory 2-0 win over near-neighbours Getafe.
Fernando Torres struck his first La Liga goal since returning to Atletico, opening the scoring after three minutes.
FootieKick shared the striker's effort on social media:
Tiago wrapped up the game shortly before the break as the Calderon kingpins strolled to an easy three points.
Malaga's season yet again looks doomed to failure after Real Vallecano beat them 1-0.
A Gael Kakuta goal was enough for the home side, driving the Red Sashes into the top half of the Spanish table.
The 23-year-old is on loan from Chelsea and is desperate to make further impact after a promising start as a teenager.

Levante were punished at home in the final moments of their match against Celta Vigo, as Charles Dias scored the only goal of the game after 86 minutes.
The experienced forward slid the ball into the net, with the hosts deserving nothing from the match.
Athletic Bilbao stabilised their campaign further after they defeated Almeria by 2-1.
Xabier Etxeita and Mikel Rico Moreno both struck in the opening gambit of the game, taking the tie away from the poor visitors. An own goal by Mikel Balenziaga offered Almeria hope, but it was too little, too late for the relegation candidates.
Granada and Eibar both played out a dull goalless draw, which further confined them to the lower regions of La Liga.
Friday Recap

Valencia will be dreaming of making a late surge for the La Liga title, as a comfortable 4-0 win over Elche pushed them to within four points of Real Madrid and five of leaders Barcelona.
Los Che had far too much class for the relegation battlers, as goals from Andre Gomes, Paco Alcacer, an own goal from Enzo Roco and a late Nicolas Otamendi header helped Nuno Santo’s men sashay to a victory.
As noted by David Cartlidge of beIN Sports, this Valencia team is looking as good as anyone in La Liga at the moment:
It was the latest exemplary display amid a wonderful run of form, meaning that Los Che now have a four-point buffer to champions Atletico Madrid in third place before their game with Getafe on Saturday.
Champions League football definitely looks like it's in the cards for the Mestalla club now, and as noted by Lee Roden of FourFourTwo, there are shades of Diego Simeone’s Atletico about this side:
Elche were a tough nut to crack initially, however. Had it not been for a rudimentary error from Przemyslaw Tyton on the stroke of half-time, they would have gone into the break with the scores level.
But as we can see here courtesy of Soccer Gods, Gomes was on hand to tuck home the loose ball after the Elche ‘keeper inexplicably spilled across:
It was the perfect time to score for Valencia. With Elche battling relegation, they needed to come out and look for an equaliser. But subsequent spaces started to appear, and the superior quality of Santo’s team started to shine through in earnest. They worked the ball through the lines superbly, with some menacing surges from Gomes causing big problems for the hosts.

The midfielder’s day got even better when his pinpoint cross found Alcacer, who made no mistake with an acrobatic finish. As noted by OptaJose, that goal for the forward means he’s already surpassed last season’s tally:
With chins on chest, Elche started to wilt. Valencia were relentless in their forays forward, though. While another cross into the box looked completely ineffective in the 71st minute, Roco panicked and turned the ball into his own net past the despairing dive of Tyton.
As we can see, it’s a moment the defender will definitely want to forget in a hurry:
Valencia seemed pleased to see out the remaining minutes, as they kept the ball well and their toiling opponents at arm's length. But there was still time for one more goal, as a brutish header from Otamendi added the gloss on a fine evening for Los Che.
As noted by Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez, it’s encouraging to see this team perform so well away from home:
The loss leaves Elche just two points clear of the relegation zone with all their positional rivals still to play this weekend. Had they gone in at half-time with the score at 0-0, they could have possibly scraped a result here. But as has been the case throughout the entire campaign, basic defensive errors have cost them dear.
Valencia look as though Champions League football is the least they’ll achieve this season at this juncture. A draw in the Clasico on Sunday would leave them within six points of the top two sides; given their marvellous run of form and the fact they still have to play both Real and Barcelona in the remaining weeks, perhaps the Mestalla faithful can dream of a late surge for the title.
