Barclays Under-21 Premier League 2015 Table: Results and Standings on March 16

Tom SunderlandMar 16, 2015

Manchester United extended their lead at the top of the under-21 Premier League on Monday evening as Southampton climbed to second with a 2-0 win over Liverpool.

A 2-1 win over Everton cemented the Red Devils' standing as Division 1 leaders in the Professional Development League, aided in part by Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 collapse at home to Norwich City earlier in the day.

Division 2 hopefuls Arsenal were unable to make up ground on leaders Middlesbrough, however, following their 0-0 stalemate at Blackburn Rovers, having now gone two games without tasting victory.

Recap

Having featured for the senior side as a substitute in Sunday's 3-0 thrashing of Spurs, Andreas Pereira was back in the under-21 spotlight on Monday evening, as he has been for a bulk of this campaign.

The Belgian-born youngster was on hand to help set up James Wilson for United's opener before defender Paddy McNair added a second in the first half, per the club's official Twitter account:

Everton came firing back after half-time and managed to snatch a late equaliser as Jonjoe Kenny netted from the penalty spot, but a 2-1 result ensures their place at the top of Division 1 is secure for now.

According to Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News, Tom Thorpe was the star of United's show:

The table-toppers will be pleased to learn of Liverpool's 2-0 defeat at Staplewood, where goals from Ryan Seager and Lloyd Isgrove gave Southampton a crucial bounce back to winning ways.

As pointed out by Saints' official Twitter account, Southampton's under-21s were waiting a long time between victories and move into second place:

Saints took Tottenham's place in second after the north Londoners slumped to a home defeat against Norwich, where defenders Kyle Callan-McFadden and Michee Efete scored for the Canaries either side of the break.

Paul Wilkinson's side moved up no fewer than five places thanks to what was a much-needed away win, which eases them away from the relegation places and even into contention for a top-five finish.

Just two days after Sunderland's senior side conceded four against Aston Villa, the Black Cats' under-21s were also leaking goals en masse as they dropped to Leicester City 4-2 on Monday.

Foxes forward Harry Panayiotou bagged a brace to go along with goals from fellow attackers Jack Barmby and Simonas Stankevicius to seal a win that pushes Leicester up into fourth:

Arsenal's 0-0 draw at Blackburn will be seen as a disappointing result for the Gunners, one which prevents them from closing down Boro's lead at the top of the Division 2 table and leaves them eight points off the summit.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion each moved away from the base of the standings with underdog victories over West Brom and Newcastle United, respectively.

After the fireworks of last week's West Midlands derby between the senior teams, Villa defeated the Baggies 3-0 on Monday evening to claim their third win in succession.

Brighton's win over the third-place Magpies wasn't enough to move them out of ninth place, but it does distance the south-coast club from the bottom places and improve their campaign prospects.
