Fernando was impressed, saying, in quotes picked up by the Daily Mail, "I wanted to say 'well done' to him after his winning goal. To me, he is the best Brazilian playing in Europe at the moment."
Coutinho was left out of Brazil's squad for last summer's World Cup but has come back into contention under new coach Dunga.
Fernando, who joined Manchester City from Porto last summer, has represented Brazil at the under-20 level but has never been capped by the senior team.
