Jose Mourinho Calls for David Luiz Ban, Defends Zlatan Ibrahimovic over Red Card

Jose Mourinho believes David Luiz should be banned for an alleged elbow on Diego Costa, while the Chelsea manager also suggests Zlatan Ibrahimovic didn't deserve to be sent off during the Blues' defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

The west London club led twice during Wednesday's UEFA Champions League round-of-16 second leg, but Thiago Silva's header in extra time made the score 2-2 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate, pushing PSG through on away goals. Laurent Blanc's men played the best part of 90 minutes with 10 men after Ibrahimovic was harshly dismissed for a 50-50 tackle on Oscar.

Mourinho wants UEFA to overturn the Swede's suspension, reported by Matt Barlow of the Daily Mail.

"I spoke to him after the game and when he speaks with me he's always honest," Mourinho said. "He would tell me if it was a reason for a red card, and he was very disappointed so if that's the case, I hope they can minimise the mistake and let him play the quarter-final. If he did nothing wrong, he deserves that."

Costa's battle with Luiz was a feature of the match, as the pair continued to physically and verbally lock horns whenever the ball got near. Mourinho believes his old defender—who headed an 86th-minute equaliser on the night—could receive punishment for an alleged elbow on the striker.

Mourinho admits he didn't see the clash in question, however, reported by Barlow.

"The David elbow I didn't see, I confess," he said. "But when UEFA give him the man of the match, I have to believe there's no elbow. Perhaps they cannot give us the penalty but maybe they can do what is fair and suspend David and take Ibra into the quarter-finals."

Mourinho admits, "We didn't deserve to go through," per Barlow. Blanc was also fair in his assessment, saying, "I think my team were better than Chelsea in every area of the pitch." The visitors used the ball excellently in midfield even after becoming a man light, with Thiago Motta and Marco Verratti dominating by keeping things simple.

PSG made smart use of the pitch, with left-back Maxwell moving upfield to ensure the side maintained its width. Blanc's men reduced Chelsea to a walking pace in the second half, highlighted when the usually solid defence switched off to concede both goals from corners.

Despite Silva handling the ball for Eden Hazard's penalty, a goal that gave Chelsea the lead in extra time, he redeemed himself at the vital moment. It could have been worse for the home side, too, if the referee had spotted a second bookable offence from Costa, who pushed Marquinhos to the ground when the Dutch official turned his back.

Chelsea ultimately have themselves to blame for not taking advantage of Kuipers' decision to send off Ibrahimovic. Granted, they could have been awarded another penalty, but other aspects of the game fell in their favour. For a team that is currently five points clear in the Premier League, the lack of quality was alarming.

Mourinho will now focus on domestic matters, where he will be hoping his side can bounce back quickly with a win over Southampton on Sunday.
