Recap

Real Madrid was one Schalke goal away from being eliminated on Tuesday. For a team that came in with a 2-0 advantage in aggregate and at one point was leading 3-2, the 4-3 loss was simply unacceptable.

Yes, Los Blancos advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals. Yes, Ronaldo stepped up and scored two hugely important goals. Yes, this is the same team that went on the road and earned a 2-0 advantage coming into the second leg, which saved them.

But giving up four goals, at home, isn't acceptable. Iker Casillas was poor. Gareth Bale was poor. The back four was pretty poor. Real Madrid was complacent. Their supporters were justifiably annoyed, Ronaldo looked like he might burn a hole through several of his teammates with his glares after the match.

Of course, after scoring two goals like the ones below, per ESPN FC on Twitter, Ronaldo has the right to expect more from his teammates:

That goal was one for the record books, as ESPN Stats & Information tweeted:

As Luka Modric told AS English after the game, the other Real Madrid players expecting Ronaldo to bail them out isn't a sound strategy:

Dermot Corrigan of ESPN, meanwhile, thinks some changes will be forthcoming:

And former player and current pundit Gary Lineker thinks one player in particular needs to step up:

Real Madrid has some soul searching to do, and with a match against Barcelona forthcoming, they better do it soon.

Porto, meanwhile, took care of their business without much issue, destroying Basel by a 4-0 score. The game featured several brilliant goals, including this one from Yacine Brahimi:

And this strike from Casemiro was something to see:

Real Madrid and Porto now each await their next opponent, as the quarterfinal draw will take place on Friday, March 20. Los Blancos go into that draw knowing they need to make some drastic changes. Porto go into it feeling pretty good about their round-of-16 performance.

One thing is certain—both clubs will just be happy to advance, no matter what the circumstances.
