Every Top 25 Team's Main College Football Recruiting Pipeline
Sustained recruiting success requires roots to be laid in particular regions that perennially produce top-tier prospects. Coaching staffs and college teams aim to establish consistency in these talent hotbeds, setting the stage for key signings on a regular basis.
These connections are often referred to as "pipelines" in the college football spectrum, and can ultimately help create championship-caliber rosters. Here's a look at key pipelines for each program that placed in last season's Associated Press Top 25 poll.
25. Memphis
1 of 25
Key Pipeline: Olive Branch High School (Olive Branch, Mississippi)
The Tigers enter spring camp with five players from the out-of-state program. The group includes defensive backs Dontrell Nelson and Jamil Collins; linebackers Leonard Pegues and Wynton McManis; and offensive lineman Chase Johnson.
24. Louisville
2 of 25
Key Pipeline: Florida
Charlie Strong made the region an area of emphasis during his tenure in Louisville after serving as defensive coordinator at Florida. His key pickups featured 2014 NFL Rookie of the Year candidate Teddy Bridgewater and running back Brandon Radcliff, the team's leading rusher.
Efforts in the Sunshine State continue under a new regime, led by assistant coaches Lamar Thomas and Terrell Buckley. The team signed five Floridians in its 2015 class, headlined by quarterback Lamar Jackson and wide receiver Devante Peete.
23. Marshall
3 of 25
Key Pipeline: Miami area
The Thundering Herd's 2014 success was aided by a large group of Miami-area natives, including quarterback Rakeem Cato, leading receiver Tommy Shuler and interceptions leader A.J. Leggett. Expect more playmakers from the area to make an impact throughout future seasons.
Miami Lakes High School standouts Antonio Howard, a former West Virginia commit, and Simino Walden were among Marshall's premier pickups this past signing day.
22. Auburn
4 of 25
Key Pipeline: Georgia
SEC squads always aim to steal away top talent from rival neighborhoods and Auburn's success in the Peach State is prime example. The Tigers' 2014 roster featured nearly 40 players who arrived from Georgia high schools.
That total is set to maintain a large percentage of Gus Malzahn's program next season, as Auburn welcomes 10 new Peach State products to campus and already holds two Georgia commits in its 2016 class. The 2015 haul includes former Georgia wide receiver commit Darius Slayton, 3-star quarterback Tyler Queen and four offensive linemen.
21. Utah
5 of 25
Key Pipeline: Bingham High School (South Jordan, Utah)
The Utes have gone to the well time and time again for talent from the in-state powerhouse. Utah's 2014 roster included five Bingham alumni, including defensive linemen Viliseni Fauonuku and Lowell Lotulelei, the younger brother of former Bingham star and eventual first-round NFL draft pick Star Lotulelei.
Utah already holds a 2016 commitment from Bingham athlete Kahi Neves. The Utes signed Bingham kicker Chayden Johnston in February.
20. USC
6 of 25
Key Pipeline: Junipero Serra High School (Gardena, California)
This connection has been extremely valuable for the Trojans and only seems to be growing stronger. NFL wide receivers Robert Woods and Marqise Lee each attended Serra, along with high-profile 2011 signee George Farmer.
More recent additions from the Los Angeles-area program include promising two-way standout Adoree' Jackson and redshirt freshman quarterback Jalen Greene. USC signed coveted Serra defenders John Houston and Rasheem Green to its 2015 class, and Steve Sarkisian is now targeting safety Brandon Burton and defensive end Oluwole Betiku on the 2016 trail.
19. Arizona
7 of 25
Key Pipeline: Tucson area
The Wildcats will always need to recruit well in California in order to remain competitive in the Pac-12, and we've seen Rich Rodriguez make inroads with Louisiana prospects. However, his most valuable territory for talent can be found on the program's home turf.
The results have been tangible during Rich Rod's tenure, highlighted by do-it-all offensive talent Ka'Deem Carey, three-year offensive line starter Jake Fisher, safety Jared Tevis, linebacker Jake Matthews and promising rising sophomore cornerback Cam Denson. Arizona already landed a pledge from 2016 Tucson defensive tackle Justin Holt.
18. Kansas State
8 of 25
Key Pipeline: Kansas junior colleges
Bill Snyder has long used JUCO products to solidify his roster. Many of these players were originally expected to compete in a Division I setting immediately after high school, but had to take an alternative route due to academics or other obstacles.
Kansas is home to some of the most reputable JUCO programs in the country, including Butler, Dodge City, Garden City and Hutchinson community colleges. Those four teams alone produced 11 members of the Wildcats' 2014 roster.
17. Ole Miss
9 of 25
Key Pipeline: Georgia
The Peach State is perennially ripe for the picking in recruiting and Ole Miss routinely takes advantage. Hugh Freeze sent a strong message to SEC foes in 2013 when he signed top overall prospect Robert Nkemdiche, previously landing older brother and impact linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche.
Tight end Evan Engram and defensive back Mike Hilton were key contributors as starters throughout the 2014 season. Ole Miss plucked 4-star running back Eric Swinney away from Georgia during the past recruiting cycle, along with coveted cornerback Montrell Custis.
16. Boise State
10 of 25
Key Pipeline: California
It doesn't take much recruiting intelligence to gather you can't build an annual Top 25 contender at Boise State with a roster based on predominantly Idaho talent. The Broncos continue to take advantage of an expansive talent pool in California by landing overlooked prospects.
Stars like running back Ian Johnson and wide receiver Titus Young were products of the Golden State. Wide receiver Thomas Sperbeck (2014 receiving yardage leader), linebacker Tanner Vallejo (leading tackler) and safety Darian Thompson (Mountain West interceptions leader) each hail from California. Boise State signed nine 2015 prospects from the Golden State.
15. Clemson
11 of 25
Key Pipeline: Florida's Gulf Coast
Sensational wide receiver Sammy Watkins, an eventual top-10 NFL draft pick, helped serve as a catalyst for this pipeline when he signed with Clemson out of South Fort Myers High School. Tarpon Springs pass-catcher Artavis Scott was a key member of the 2014 class and broke through with 965 receiving yards as a true freshman.
Dabo Swinney signed an elite trio of talent from Tampa in his 2015 haul, landing receiver Deon Cain, running back/slot receiver Ray-Ray McCloud and offensive tackle Jake Fruhmorgen. T.J. Chase, a 4-star receiver at IMG Academy in nearby Bradenton, is a key 2016 commitment.
14. Missouri
12 of 25
Key Pipeline: Lee's Summit, Missouri
The community has been kind to Mizzou, producing players like Logan Cheadle, Evan Boehm and Kevin Pendleton. That trio previously played at Lee's Summit West High School.
Incoming 4-star quarterback Drew Lock starred at Lee's Summit High School, where longtime Tigers backup passer Corbin Berkstresser and defensive back DeAndre McKenzie played.
13. Wisconsin
13 of 25
Key Pipeline: Florida
The Badgers are among many teams that routinely claim a share of the substantial recruiting spoils at coaches' disposals in the talent-laden area. This is a developing pipeline Wisconsin will look to maintain while moving on to its third head coach of this decade.
The past two recruiting classes produced eight Florida prospects. Key members of the collection include quarterback D.J. Gillins, wide receiver George Rushing and linebacker Nick Thomas.
12. Arizona State
14 of 25
Key Pipeline: California
Nestled near college football prospect factories Texas and California, Arizona State has ample opportunities to reach beyond borders for quality talent. The Sun Devils have leaned west in that regard, reeling in some of California's premier playmakers despite major contention from Pac-12 rivals USC, Stanford and UCLA.
The team's 2015 roster will feature more than 30 California natives, including 4-star 2015 signees Brady White, Joseph Wicker, Zach Robertson, Khaylan Thomas, Stanley Norman and Jay Jay Wilson. Among Arizona State's eight top-rated newcomers, six come from California.
11. Mississippi State
15 of 25
Key Pipeline: Alabama
The Bulldogs have hung tough competing with in-state powerhouses Auburn and Alabama in their recruiting efforts. After signing just five players from the state between 2010 and 2012, Dan Mullen has managed to secure 14 signatures from Alabama during the past three cycles.
It's a group that includes 4-star 2015 running back signee Nick Gibson and established Bulldogs like tight end Malcolm Johnson, offensive lineman Blaine Clausell, linebacker Beniquez Brown and wide receiver De'Runnya Wilson. Mississippi State currently holds two Alabama commitments in its 2016 class.
10. UCLA
16 of 25
Key Pipeline: Trinity League, Southern California
This six-team collection ranks among the most competitive high school football landscapes across the country and features several premier private schools in Orange and Los Angeles counties. UCLA has enjoyed success targeting stars at these schools, evidenced by 5-star 2015 signees Josh Rosen (St. John Bosco) and Keisean Lucier-South (Orange Lutheran).
The Bruins' 2014 roster included eight players from the league. Top potential 2016 targets include 4-star wide receiver Dylan Crawford (Santa Margarita Catholic) and running back Sean McGrew (St. John Bosco).
9. Georgia
17 of 25
Key Pipeline: American Heritage High School (Fort Lauderdale, Florida)
This is certainly a connection Mark Richt will work to continue to cultivate with the help of former Florida State defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. The Bulldogs narrowly missed on 5-star cornerback Tarvarus McFadden during the 2015 recruiting cycle, but managed to land offensive playmakers Sony Michel and Isaiah McKenzie from American Heritage last year.
Starting kicker Marshall Morgan also attended the high school. Georgia continues to use recruiting resources at American Heritage, extending 2016 offers to tight end Nick Eubanks and defensive end Brian Burns.
8. Georgia Tech
18 of 25
Key Pipeline: Sandy Creek High School (Tyrone, Georgia)
The list starts with eventual NFL Hall of Fame receiver Calvin Johnson, so the bar is set pretty high when it comes to athletes making a leap from Sandy Creek to Georgia Tech. Fellow NFL veteran Andrew Gardner, an offensive lineman, also followed that path.
Sandy Creek alum Isaiah Johnson just wrapped up a career in the Yellow Jackets' defensive backfield that featured 41 starts at safety. Georgia Tech just signed Sandy Creek defensive end Trent Sellers in its 2015 class, while high school teammate and 4-star offensive guard Chandler Tuitt is a key 2016 target.
7. Baylor
19 of 25
Key Pipeline: Midway High School (Waco, Texas)
It's always nice to have a star-studded high school football program in your backyard while assessing recruiting classes. That's exactly what Baylor has in Midway, which produced five current members of the Bears' roster.
That total will soon grow to seven players, as Art Briles signed Midway linebacker Lenoy Jones and wide receiver Devontre Stricklin in February.
6. Florida State
20 of 25
Key Pipeline: IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida)
You could certainly throw Miami Central High School (Devonta Freeman, Dalvin Cook, Da'Vante Phillips, Keir Thomas, Jamel Cook, etc.) into the discussion here. Instead, we'll shift the focus to burgeoning national power IMG Academy, which was coached by former Seminoles star Chris Weinke until earlier this winter.
Florida State may have found its future at quarterback in 2015 signee Deondre Francois and 2016 commit Malik Henry, both IMG products. Top-rated tight end Isaac Nauta also pledged to the Seminoles, and could soon be joined by teammate and 5-star defensive end Shavar Manuel.
Expect this pipeline to pay huge dividends for years to come.
5. Michigan State
21 of 25
Key Pipeline: Detroit area
The Spartans landed a pair of players from Detroit Martin Luther King High School last signing day, including top in-state offensive lineman Kyonta Stallworth. Malik McDowell, a 5-star defensive lineman who anchored the 2015 class, is from the suburban Detroit community of Southfield.
Michigan State is known as a program that maximizes prospect potential and Mark Dantonio has his sights set on Detroit standouts again in 2016. Dynamic wide receiver Donnie Corley, another M.L.K. product, may top the list.
4. Alabama
22 of 25
Key Pipeline: Home turf
From national powerhouse Hoover High School to star-studded Carver High School, the state offers Alabama plenty of opportunities to restock its roster on an annual basis. Eventual NFL stars DeMeco Ryans, Andre Smith and T.J. Yeldon are among key homegrown products who've made an immense impact.
More recently, top Birmingham prospects Marlon Humphrey, Shaun Dion Hamilton and Daron Payne have helped spearhead impressive Alabama recruiting hauls. The Crimson Tide's focus shifts to 5-star Montgomery defensive tandem Lyndell Wilson and Marlon Davidson, and nearby Gordo linebacker Ben Davis in the 2016 cycle.
3. TCU
23 of 25
Key Pipeline: Bowie High School and Martin High School (Arlington, Texas)
The nearby high schools have served TCU well on the recruiting trail, resulting in six total players on the Horned Frogs' spring roster. This group includes starting wide receiver Kolby Listenbee (Bowie), sophomore running back Kyle Hicks (Martin), kicker Jaden Oberkrom (Martin) and newcomer receiver Tony James (Bowie).
The team narrowly missed out on prized 2014 Martin defensive end Myles Garrett, who went on to set an SEC freshman record for sacks at Texas A&M last season.
2. Oregon
24 of 25
Key Pipeline: Hawaii
Consistent recruiting efforts in Hawaii require significant program investment in time and travel expenses. Oregon has an edge in proximity as a West Coast university and has been diligent in scouting efforts.
Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota received only two offers—from Oregon and Memphis. He was one of six Hawaiian products on the Ducks' 2014 roster. Oregon signed two players from Hawaii in February, including 5-star defensive end Canton Kaumatule in February.
1. Ohio State
25 of 25
Key Pipeline: Glenville High School (Cleveland)
More than 20 Glenville High School standouts have signed with the Buckeyes since 2002, including several notable figures. Wide receiver Ted Ginn, defensive back Donte Whitner and Heisman quarterback Troy Smith lead the list of names and are forever part of Ohio State lore.
Glenville alum Cardale Jones added himself to that mix in January, leading the Buckeyes to a national title in unexpected fashion. The quarterback was one of six Glenville products on the championship roster.
