Chelsea missed a golden opportunity to leapfrog Manchester United at the top of the Under-21 Premier League after they slipped to defeat at Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur were the big winners and climbers of Monday, beating Everton 4-0 in the early kick-off, and finding themselves up in the second spot.

In the second tier, Middlesbrough's 1-0 win against bottom-team Wolverhampton Wanderers saw them climb to the summit of the division.

The night could have ended well for Everton as leaders of the Under-21 Premier League, if they would have defeated Tottenham Hotspur, but the Toffees were destroyed by the north London outfit, with Spurs running out 4-0 winners.

The home team slammed all four of their goals past Everton in just 35 minutes, with striker Shaquile Coulthirst opening the scoring after just five minutes at the Enfield Training Centre.

Coulthirst grabbed his second, and Spurs' third, immediately after defender Connor Ogilvie had doubled the home team's advantage after 21 minutes.

The humiliation was completed by Ruben Lameiras, who scored from the penalty spot, guaranteeing the points in lightning-quick time.

Coach Matt Wells was delighted with his Spurs team's performance on Monday and expressed his joy, per the club's official website:

"

This time, we showed a lot of the aspects of play we’ve been speaking to the players about, more penetration, more forward thinking, passing and running, so in the end it was very pleasing.

What was pleasing, especially in the first half, was that we built on what we did at Southampton against a good Everton team and special mention to Bongani Khumalo, Filip Lesniak, Connor Ogilvie and Alex McQueen who as a back four, were outstanding.

We’ve a lot of games to go and plenty to play for. We’re still in the shake-up in the league, joint-top with a game in hand and that’s important, we’re always demanding of individual performances but the collective is important as well.

In the day's other big match, Liverpool carried on forward in the spirit of their first team, as the Under-21s put Chelsea to the sword.

Blues starlet Isaiah Brown started for his club, with Chelsea confirming their selection on social media before the match:

But Liverpool were not to be undone and largely controlled the affair, with goals from winger Harry Wilson and forward Jerome Sinclair sealing the points.

Wilson is a burgeoning talent for the Reds and was recently "likened to Wales stars [Gareth] Bale and [Ryan] Giggs" by Craig Hope of the Daily Mail.

Former Liverpool player Neil Mellor lauded his former team's youngsters, giving Sinclair a special mention for his individual finish:

In the second tier of under-21 football, Middlesbrough find themselves three points clear at the top of Division 2 after their 1-0 win against bottom-side Wolves.

Forward Mustapha Carayol's effort on 20 minutes was enough for the Riverside club to secure the victory.

Blackburn and Brighton played out a 0-0 draw in the other Division 2 match, leaving both sides rooted to the bottom half of the standings.
