EPL Table: Latest Week 27 Results, Scores and 2015 Premier League Standings

Tom SunderlandFeb 28, 2015

Last season's top two finishers will collide on Sunday as reigning Premier League champions Manchester City make the trip to face Liverpool on Sunday.

The Capital One Cup final between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur has diverted some attention away from league matters this weekend, but the English top flight's reduced schedule won't suffer in entertainment value.

All eyes turn to Anfield on Sunday, but Manchester United and Swansea City are among those top-half competitors to have taken their chances on Saturday.

Sunday Recap

Manchester City supporters must really despise Philippe Coutinho.

Much like he did a season ago, the crafty Brazilian scored the game-winning goal against Manchester City, this time with a rocket shot from outside the box to give Liverpool a crucial 2-1 win over the Citizens, keeping them on pace with Arsenal and Manchester United as the battle for a top-four spot heats up.

The Reds struck first in this one, as Jordan Henderson scored on a cracker of a shot from distance himself. City pulled even on a beautiful pass from Sergio Aguero to Edin Dzeko behind Liverpool's defense in the box, with the striker finding net, but this was Liverpool's afternoon.

Henry Winter of The Telegraph has more on Liverpool's big win:

The Reds are red-hot at the moment, having not yet lost in Premier League play in the 2015. They are a club that the rest of the Premier League does not want to see at the moment.

In the day's later game, Arsenal earned a 2-0 win against Everton, with Olivier Giroud scoring a goal after his dreadful performance against Monaco mid-week and Tomas Rosicky adding a second after coming on as a substitute in the second half.

Giroud's goal was so key for him after a really tough week, as David Wall of OptaJean noted:

If he can be a bit more clinical in front of goal, Arsenal are going to be tough to knock out of a top-four place.

Saturday Recap

Only one of Saturday's six Premier League ties saw both teams make their way onto the scoreline as five of the day's victors emerged with clean sheets to their name, too.

One of those playing to an unanswered scoreline was Manchester United, who beat Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford to get their record back to winning ways.

Per ESPN's Miguel Delaney, manager Louis van Gaal was left very pleased with the victory, especially following United's second-half display:

After suffering defeat to Swansea City a week ago, the Red Devils needed a more encouraging display, and captain Wayne Rooney was on hand with a double to give Van Gaal's side their spoils.

There was refereeing controversy at Old Trafford, however, when Wes Brown was sent off by official Roger East for bringing down Radamel Falcao—even though it was John O'Shea who committed the foul, per Eurosport:

West Ham United and Crystal Palace were responsible for the only result of the day that involved both team's scoring and the Hammers were somewhat fortunate to even grab a consolation in their 3-1 home loss.

Glenn Murray bagged two for the Eagles but saw his day come to an early end after picking up a second bookable offence, per Squawka:

Stewart Downing teed Enner Valencia up for West Ham's only goal in the 76th minute, but Alan Pardew's men took a deserved win to clinch their third successive away win in league competition.

The rest of Saturday's results each ended with 1-0 scorelines as Swansea City, Newcastle United, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion claimed wins to give their respective campaigns a boost.

BURNLEY, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 28: Garry Monk the manager of Swansea City applauds the fans folloiwing his team's 1-0 victory during the Barclays Premier League match between Burnley and Swansea City at Turf Moor on February 28, 2015 in Burnley, England. (

Garry Monk's Swans were the only outfit among that quartet travelling on the day and came away from Turf Moor with three points thanks to a second-half own goal courtesy of Kieran Trippier.

Magpies caretaker manager John Carver, meanwhile, was happy to claim his side's first win of 2015 with a 1-0 beating of Aston Villa, quoted by the official Premier League Twitter account as saying:

Papiss Demba Cisse struck to give the north-east strugglers, 11th, a key result in their fight for a top-half finish, with five points now separating them from Crystal Palace in 12th.

Southampton's recent troubles reached new depths on Saturday as Saints fell to West Brom at the Hawthorns to stretch their winless streak to three games.

Tony Pulis' side took the lead after Saido Berahino opened the scoring just two minutes into the clash and showed some sound resilience at the back to withstand Ronald Koeman's side.

Pulis praised the steely attitude of his men following their win and noted that Berahino is evolving as a player following his contract dispute issues.

The Baggies move up to 13th with those three points in tow and are now eight points clear of the drop zone, keeping their fourth consecutive clean sheet as Pulis' influence appears to be taking hold.

Lastly, it was a Peter Crouch goal that gave Stoke their Saturday triumph over Hull City, heading past the Tigers defence after 71 minutes to cement the Potters' place in 10th.
