Which Athletes Will Be on Notice During Texas' Junior Day?

Damon SaylesFeb 26, 2015

The Texas Longhorns have four commitments in their 2016 class. Pulling four more this weekend at their Saturday junior day is a lofty goal.

Lofty but not impossible.

The Longhorns appear to be regaining the swagger they once had with in-state prospects. Even with a 6-7 record for the 2014 and a blowout loss to Arkansas in the Texas Bowl, Charlie Strong and his coaching staff have managed to win over the respect of 2016's elite.

And it's only Year 2 for Strong.

Saturday's junior day will feature a large number of players in attendance. While it isn't expected for the Longhorns to see a handful of players commit, it is expected to see Texas in the hunt for every player it offers who will be in Austin.

Three of the four Texas commits—4-star wide receiver Reggie Hemphill-Mapps, 3-star linebacker Demarco Boyd and the newest pledge, 4-star quarterback Shane Buechele—are expected to be in attendance (4-star California receiver Collin Johnson confirmed he won't attend). You can bet that they all will be in player-recruiter mode in an effort to make Texas a contender for the No. 1 spot in the 2016 team rankings.

Here are 10 Texas targets, in alphabetical order, either expected to be in attendance or seriously considering making the trip to Austin on Saturday.

5-Star OT Willie Allen

1 of 10

Hometown: New Orleans (John Curtis)

Size: 6'7", 300 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 30 (No. 5 OT)

247 interest grade: Cool

Willie Allen told Bleacher Report Thursday afternoon that while he hasn't officially made up his mind, he's strongly considering making the trip to Austin, which would be huge for the Longhorns. Allen is a top-five offensive nationally, and with his size, strength and movement, he can be an immediate contributor to the Longhorns offensive line.

Other offers to watch: LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss

3-Star LB Jordan Carmouche

2 of 10

Hometown: Manvel, Texas

Size: 6'1", 219 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 635 (No. 49 OLB)

247 interest grade: Warmer

Jordan Carmouche is proof that sometimes star ratings are irrelevant. Carmouche is inching toward 20 offers, and he offers good lateral movement, quickness off the snap and overall versatile. He is skillful and savvy enough to effectively play outside linebacker or safety at the next level.

Other offers to watch: Baylor, Oklahoma, Arkansas

4-Star OT Jean Delance

3 of 10

Hometown: Mesquite, Texas (North Mesquite)

Size: 6'5", 270 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 162 (No. 17 OT)

247 interest grade: N/A (committed to Oklahoma)

Jean Delance's recruiting is intriguing. He committed to Oklahoma on Nov. 25, but he's made sure to keep his recruiting ajar. Delance told the Horns247 staff that while he doesn't have a Texas offer yet, the Longhorns would be major contenders if he were to get one. It's still a question whether he'll make it to Austin for the junior day, but if he does—and if he gets that offer—stay tuned.

Other offers to watch: TCU, Texas A&M, Auburn, Alabama

4-Star WR Tren'Davian Dickson

4 of 10

Hometown: Navasota, Texas

Size: 6'1", 178 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 99 (No. 19 WR)

247 interest grade: Warm

It seemed all Tren'Davian Dickson did as a junior was catch touchdowns. He set the national single-season record for touchdown receptions in a season with 39 and also helped his high school win a state championship. Dickson, a former Baylor commit, will be a dangerous receiving option for one lucky school. Texas is hoping it will be that school.

Other offers to watch: Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma, Arizona State

4-Star WR Devin Duvernay

5 of 10

Hometown: Sachse, Texas

Size: 5'11", 185 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 35 (No. 3 WR)

247 interest grade: Cool

Super-explosive athlete Devin Duvernay can be electric at the drop of a hat. When he touches the ball, he is considered a home run threat. Duvernay can be a quality slot receiver and also a potential kickoff or punt returner for the Longhorns.

Other offers to watch: Texas A&M, Alabama, Baylor, Oklahoma, TCU

4-Star LB Dontavious Jackson

6 of 10

Hometown: Houston (Alief Elsik)

Size: 6'3", 235 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 155 (No. 4 ILB)

247 interest grade: Warm

Remember when Charlie Strong said he wanted to "put the 'T' back into Texas?" One of those Ts was toughness, and Dontavious Jackson is a tough guy. Jackson brings a level of aggressiveness and physical play that would get him quality minutes on the field early in his college career.

Other offers to watch: Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Michigan

5-Star S Eric Monroe

7 of 10

Hometown: Houston (North Shore)

Size: 6'0", 180 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 25 (No. 2 S)

247 interest grade: Warm

The versatility of Eric Monroe makes him a wanted player. He has the skills to play safety, nickelback or outside linebacker at the next level. Texas likes versatile defenders, and Monroe would fit well in Charlie Strong's defensive scheme.

Other offers to watch: Baylor, LSU, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, UCLA

4-Star RB Kyle Porter

8 of 10

Hometown: Katy, Texas

Size: 5'11", 190 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 304 (No. 22 RB)

247 interest grade: Cool

Kyle Porter is that change-of-pace back who can really be a weapon in Texas' backfield. He has quickness and explosiveness that would frustrate defenders primarily in the second half. Additionally, Porter runs stronger than his frame would assume.

Other offers to watch: Baylor, TCU, Tennessee, Illinois

4-Star OT J.P. Urquidez

9 of 10

Hometown: Copperas Cove, Texas

Size: 6'6", 299 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 262 (No. 26 OT)

247 interest grade: Warmer

J.P. Urquidez has everything you want in an offensive tackle. He's a tall, strong lineman with a great frame—one that can add 25 or 30 pounds without it playing as a disadvantage. He's quick enough to play either the tackle or guard position. It may be Urquidez's mental preparation to the game that makes him even more of an attractive option.

Other offers to watch: Baylor, Texas A&M, Oklahoma

4-Star RB Trayveon Williams

10 of 10

Hometown: Houston (North Shore)

Size: 5'9", 179 lbs

247 composite rank: No. 323 (No. 6 APB)

247 interest grade: Warm

Whether it's running the ball, catching out of the backfield or lining up as a slot receiver, Trayveon Williams has shown that he can be a dangerous option for an offense. He's not the biggest back, but his shiftiness, quickness and field vision make him one to watch

Other offers to watch: Texas A&M, TCU, Texas Tech
