AFC Champions League 2015: Scores, Results for Preliminary Round 1 Fixtures

Tom SunderlandFeb 4, 2015

The first round of preliminary qualification for the 2015 AFC Champions League kicked off on Wednesday, when Warriors beat Yadanarbon after a penalty shootout in the first fixture of the day.

Burmese hopefuls Yadanarbon made it into the qualifying stage after winning the 2014 Myanmar National League, while Singapore's Warriors took the top spot in last year's S.League, the top flight of Singaporean football.

Reigning Malaysia Super League champions Johor Darul Ta'zim will take on 2013-14 I-League title winners Bengaluru later on Wednesday, with both teams making their AFC Champions League debuts.

Yadanarbon 1-1 Warriors AET (Warriors Win 6-5 on Penalties)

The two teams up first on Wednesday played to a goalless draw in 90 minutes, each fully aware that defeat at Mandalay's Mandalarthiri Stadium would mean an exit at the competition's first hurdle.

Yadanarbon goalkeeper Thiha Sithu didn't have a great deal to do early on in the clash, sitting largely as spectator to the duel for possession in midfield.

The two teams went in scoreless at the break after a fairly uneventful opening 45 minutes, with more risks required if either team was to decide the game in normal time.

However, as fatigue became a factor in the second half, Yadanarbon manager U Khin Mg Tint made changes to the core of his side, with midfielders James Meyer and Nanda Lin Kyaw Chit hauled off for Thet Naing and captain Yan Paing, respectively.

Warriors boss Alex Weaver matched the changes with some offensive restructuring of his own, although neither tactician would see the substitutions pay off in normal time, Asian Football Feast confirming extra time:

That all changed in the eighth minute of the added 30, though, as one of those brought on from the bench, Andy Ahmad, bagged the game's opener to put Warriors in front.

According to Nigel Chin of Vox Sports, it was the Singaporean midfielder's first career goal:

However, defender Ye Win Aung rose to equalise just three minutes later, forcing a penalty shootout after a 1-1 finish, per Fox Sports Asia:

Both teams were resilient from 12 yards, but it was Yadanarbon who blinked first, allowing Warriors to seal a 6-5 shootout victory and book their place in the next round of qualifying.

There, they'll go up against Guangzhou R&F, who placed third in last season's Chinese Super League and are competing in their maiden AFC Champions League campaign.

The winner of that tie will go on to face Australian A-League outfit Central Coast Mariners for a place in the 2015 AFC Champions League group stage.

Johor Darul Ta'zim 2-1 Bengaluru AET

Wednesday second qualification bout also went into extra time after I-League representatives Bengaluru forced their way to a 91st-minute equaliser against Johor Darul Ta'zim.

However, it would count for nought after Malaysian international Suppiah Chanturu restored Johor's lead in the eighth minute of extra time before the Malaysia Super League champions went on to seal their 2-1 triumph.

Johor Darul Ta'zim have just six days to prepare for their second-round preliminary against Bangkok Glass next Tuesday, hoping to book a playoff place opposite Beijing Guoan.
