This Week in the SEC: Tigers D Stifles Spurrier

Ryan BlanchfieldSep 22, 2007

IconWeek Four in the SEC saw a dominating defensive performance, a near colossal upset, an OT thriller, and just about everything in between.

Let's get started with the D...

LSU 28, South Carolina 16

My predicted winner: LSU

South Carolina was flying high before this one. LSU brought them back to earth.

The Tigers D proved to be too much for even the Ol' Ball Coach to handle, holding the Gamecocks to just 41 yards.

That performance and a brilliant fake field goal that left everyone including Spurrier baffled led to the Bayou Bengals' triumph in Baton Rouge.

Kentucky 42, Arkansas 29

My predicted winner: Kentucky

Arkansas' tandem of RBs ran for a combined 306 yards, but it wasn't enough, as Kentucky's loaded offense once again carried the Wildcats to victory.

Heisman candidate Andre Woodson had another stellar game with 265 yards and two scores. This is the second time in a row Kentucky has proved me right in a big game—these guys may be in a January bowl game.

Auburn 55, New Mexico State 20

My predicted winner: Auburn

Tommy Tuberville's Tigers got a much-needed win after being upset by South Florida and Mississippi State.

It was anyone's game at halftime, with Auburn up 21-20. Tuberville must have given one hell of a pep-talk, as the Tigers outscored the Aggies 34-0 in the second half.

A first half effort like that won't stand against Florida next week.

IconFlorida 30, Ole Miss 24

My predicted winner: Florida

Florida was going to blow out Ole Miss, right?

Wrong.

The Rebels gave the Gators all they could handle today—but once again, Tim Tebow was superman. The young QB accounted for all four Gator touchdowns, with two on the ground and two through the air.

Ole Miss' success came mainly from QB Seth Adams, who threw for over 300 yards.

MSU 31, Gardner-Webb 15

My predicted winner: Mississippi State

Sure, Miss St. only played Gardner-Webb, but they took care of business and got the W.

Sylvester Croom has MSU looking as good as they ever have under him. The Bulldogs are 3-1 and pushing for six wins—but they do play in the SEC, so it won't be easy.

Tennessee 48, Arkansas State 27

My predicted winner: Tennessee

Tennessee may have allowed almost 30 points to Arkansas State, but don't forget that they were coming off a 59-20 drubbing in the Swamp.

This game was played mainly on the ground, as each team amassed over 175 rushing yards. The difference came in the air, though, where Tennessee threw for 335 yards to Arkansas State's 199.

Tennessee hosts Georgia in a showdown next week in Neyland Stadium.

Georgia 26, Alabama 23 (OT)

My predicted winner: Alabama

If there was one game I didn't regret watching this week, this was it.

'Bama overcame a 20-10 fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime, then had to settle for a 42-yard Leigh Tiffin field goal to open the overtime. On Georgia's first play from scrimmage in OT, Matthew Stafford dropped back, double-clutched, and threw a frozen rope to Mikey Henderson for a 25-yard game-winning TD.

I guess I was wrong.
