Winners and Losers from the FA Cup 5th-Round Draw

Ian RodgersJan 26, 2015

After a weekend of FA Cup shocks, the fifth-round draw was made on Monday night.

Bradford City, who beat Chelsea, 4-2, at Stamford Bridge in the fourth round, have been handed a home tie against Sunderland or Fulham.

Middlesbrough stunned Manchester City with their 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday and were rewarded with another potential Premier League scalp when they were given a trip to Arsenal.

But who are the winners and losers from the FA Cup fifth-round draw?

Winner: Manchester United

After a weekend in which a number of their Premier League contemporaries were dispatched from the FA Cup, Manchester United could be forgiven for being wary of a trip to Preston or Sheffield United in the next round.

However, the Red Devils' pairing with the winners of the all-League One replay represents a golden opportunity to reach the quarter-finals for Louis van Gaal.

Cambridge United, of course, still remain an obstacle to the Old Trafford club, but it is unlikely lightning will strike again in the replay.

Winner: Crystal Palace

Alan Pardew is enjoying a wonderful honeymoon with Crystal Palace following his arrival as manager from Newcastle United.

The Eagles have won all four matches under their former player, including a 3-2 win at Southampton on Saturday in the FA Cup fourth round.

Palace have now been handed only their second home tie in the competition since 2007 after drawing the winners of the Liverpool vs. Bolton replay.

Pardew famously scored the winner in the 1990 FA Cup semi-final win over the Reds; could he mastermind another historic win to keep the Eagles soaring?

Loser: Bradford City

Bradford City are on a high after their stunning comeback victory at Chelsea on Saturday, and few would have begrudged them another money-spinning shot at one of the major Premier League names left in the tournament.

Instead, they have been handed a fifth-round tie at home to the winners of the Fulham vs. Sunderland replay.

The Black Cats supporters will guarantee a full house at Valley Parade if they can see off the Cottagers, but it seems an underwhelming return for what the West Yorkshire team achieved at the weekend.

Winner: Aston Villa

Aston Villa fans and players were simply happy to celebrate scoring a goal on Sunday after a searing drought in the Premier League.

But advancing into the FA Cup fifth round at the expense of Championship high-fliers Bournemouth was a (largely) unexpected bonus.

However, the fifth-round draw has seen Paul Lambert's team handed another home draw, this time against Leicester City, who are bottom of the top flight.

Could Lambert and Villa be on the way to a confidence-boosting passage into the last eight? They have certainly been granted a chance in the draw.

Winner: Arsenal

5 of 5

Whisper it, but Arsenal seem to be hitting some form in the Premier League and the FA Cup.

The win at Manchester City was followed by the victory at Brighton on Sunday to ease the cupholders into the fifth round.

Now, the Gunners have been handed a home tie with the visit of Middlesbrough to the Emirates Stadium in the next round of the FA Cup.

Some might argue that the Teessiders are not to be sniffed at, as their win at Manchester City on Saturday proved, but the bottom line is Arsenal are at home to lower-league opposition.
