5 Biggest Blunders in World Football This Weekend of Jan. 24-25
Our regular blunders feature is back this weekend, as we take in some of the biggest mistakes, errors and moments of madness around the game over the past couple of days.
We've got a real mix this time around, from horrendous goalkeeping to outfield players having a total breakdown in their on-pitch actions.
Here are our top five...starting over in Belgium with a big theme from the weekend.
Steven Defour
1 of 5
If you haven't seen it yet, there's a chance you've been under a rock this weekend, but (prepare yourselves here) Steven Defour was sent off on Sunday for (ready for it?) kicking the ball out of play, at the opposing team's spectators, having been taunted all game long and shown a huge banner of his own severed head.
Really.
Defour, a former Standard Liege hero, is back in Belgium playing for rivals Anderlecht now. His former supporters are, it's fair to say, unhappy about it.
Lukasz Fabianski
2 of 5
Lukasz Fabianski had a horrific moment for Swansea in the FA Cup this weekend, failing to save a completely routine shot late in the match.
It didn't matter enormously. His side was already 2-1 down to Blackburn Rovers at the time, but it certainly killed off any hopes of a late equaliser.
Watch the gaffe here.
Michel Vorm
3 of 5
Fabianski can take solace from the fact he wasn't the only keeper to make a fool of himself in this weekend's FA Cup matches.
Michel Vorm performed an even more bizarre action in trying to save a late effort for Spurs against Leicester City, and his own inability to manage basic goalkeeping meant that Tottenham exited the competition, losing 2-1 as a result of the late error.
See the howler here.
Manchester City Defence
4 of 5
I'm not entirely sure who to blame here. Manchester City lost 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, with the first goal coming as a result of awful all-round inability to deal with the ball by the entire back line and goalkeeper.
Firstly, City lost a double aerial dual in midfield, then Dedryck Boyata failed to win a tackle. Fernando then attempted a backpass that wasn't hard enough, and goalkeeper Willy Caballero only managed to boot the ball at an onrushing attacker. Finally, Fernando slid back in to stop the ball crossing the line but only succeeded in hitting it against Patrick Bamford, who bundled it over the line.
Watch a lesson in how not to defend right here.
Emmanuel Cascione
5 of 5We finish up over in Serie A, where Cesena managed a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Parma.
The moment of the match came when Emmanuel Cascione scored a horrible own goal, prodding the ball back to his goalkeeper from the edge of the area—and having to watch as the ball rolled past his stopper and into the net.
Although this was the equaliser in the game, Alejandro Rodriguez scored a last-minute winner to ensure Cascione didn't have to feel too bad.
