11 2016 College Football Recruits Already Piling Up Monster Offers

Brian LeighJan 22, 2015

National signing day 2015 is less than two weeks away, which means national signing day 2016 is roughly one year and two weeks away. GET HYPE!

Seriously, though, if you think it's premature to talk about this, you've never paid attention to recruiting. 247Sports uses "247" for a reason: because the recruiting cycle never stops. A more accurate (but understandably less catchy) name would be 247365Sports.

On that note, let's look at the players drawing the most interest in the 2016 class. Eleven of the top 50 players on the 247Sports composite rankings already have 26 or more scholarship offers, which is crazy for a group of high school juniors. And that group doesn't even include the No. 1 overall player, offensive tackle Greg Little.

Sound off and let us know where you think these guys will play.

OLB Shane Simmons (Hyattsville, Maryland)

1 of 11

Composite Rank: 29    OLB Rank: 2    Committed to: Penn State

Offer List (26)

Alabama, Arizona State, Baylor, Cincinnati, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, Miami, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Wisconsin

Where Will He Play?

Penn State. Shane Simmons committed to the Nittany Lions July 30 and has since taken four unofficial visits. He hasn't been to any other campus in that time. Florida State was the main competition before his commitment, and Ohio State and Maryland were lurking, too. But for now, he seems happy in Happy Valley.

QB Shea Patterson (Shreveport, Louisiana)

2 of 11

Composite Rank: 16    QB Rank: 3   Committed to: n/a

Offer List (26)

Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Arkansas, Baylor, Cal, Clemson, Houston, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Tulsa, USC, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

Where Will He Play?

Your guess is as good as mine. LSU was thought to be the favorite, but in-season trips to USC and Ole Miss made things complicated. So did a return trip to USC in January. Shea Patterson seems to like the Trojans, but with Max Browne and Ricky Town ahead of him, he'd be joining a bit of a logjam. The same can't be said of LSU and Ole Miss.

DT Rashan Gary (Scotch Plains, New Jersey)

3 of 11

Composite Rank: 2    DT Rank: 1    Committed to: n/a

Offer List (26)

Alabama, Army, Auburn, Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Florida, Florida State, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, Tennessee, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin

Where Will He Play?

Ohio State. Head coach Urban Meyer and offensive line coach Ed Warriner visited Rashan Gary Jan. 15, three days after the Buckeyes won the national title. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson visited Jan. 21, less than a week later. Alabama has the lead on Gary's Crystal Ball, but Ohio State has made him a priority and seems to be making an impact. Meyer and Nick Saban are going at it again.

SDE Rahshaun Smith (Towson, Maryland)

4 of 11

Composite Rank: 44    SDE Rank: 4    Committed to: n/a

Offer List (27)

Alabama, Arkansas, Boston College, Clemson, Connecticut, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Penn State, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin

Where Will He Play?

Clemson. Rahshaun Smith visited Death Valley Oct. 25, when the Tigers beat Syracuse 16-6. They had four sacks and 12 tackles for loss, continuing a trend of dominant play from the defensive line. Florida State and Oklahoma are big factors, and Michigan could make a move with new defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin, who came by way of Florida. This could still go any number of ways.

ATH Demetris Robertson (Savannah, Georgia)

5 of 11

Composite Rank: 36    ATH Rank: 1    Committed To: Alabama

Offer List (27)

Akron, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia Tech, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin

Where Will He Play?

Alabama. Departed linebackers coach Kevin Steele played a part in Demetris Robertson's recruitment, but defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has been his primary recruiter. As long as Smart stays in Tuscaloosa, Robinson has no reason to leave. Still, keep an eye on LSU (where Steele is the new defensive coordinator) and Georgia.

CB Levonta Taylor (Virginia Beach, Virginia)

6 of 11

Composite Rank: 24    CB Rank: 2    Committed to: n/a

Offer List (29)

Arizona State, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Kentucky, LSU, Marshall, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Old Dominion, Ole Miss, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas Tech, UCLA, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Wisconsin

Where Will He Play?

Virginia. Levonta Taylor wouldn't be the first 5-star defender the Wahoos have kept in state; he would join safety Quin Blanding and defensive tackle Andrew Brown from the class of 2014. UVA has all seven of the predictions on Taylor's Crystal Ball, thanks in large part to the work of ace recruiter Chip West.

S Brandon Jones (Nacogdoches, Texas)

7 of 11

Composite Rank: 20    S Rank: 1    Committed to: n/a

Offer List (32)

Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida State, Georgia, Houston, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Louisiana Tech, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State Ole Miss, Purdue, Stanford, TCU, Texas, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Tulsa, USC, Washington State

Where Will He Play?

Texas A&M. Brandon Jones took three trips to College Station in 2014: one in May, one in September and one in November. He hasn't taken any other visits. The Aggies have all 17 predictions on Jones' Crystal Ball and just added defensive coordinator John Chavis, formerly of LSU, to their coaching staff. Per Michael Taglienti of Bleacher Report, hiring The Chief has already made an impact on recruiting.

WR Devin Duvernay (Sachse, Texas)

8 of 11

Composite Rank: 45    WR Rank: 6    Committed to: n/a

Offer List (33)

Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Boise State, Clemson, Colorado, Colorado State, Duke, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Miami, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Northern Colorado, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Oregon State, San Diego State, Stanford, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Tulsa, UCLA, Washington, Wisconsin

Where Will He Play?

Somewhere in Texas, probably. Devin Duvernay has only taken visits to Texas A&M and Baylor, although neither of those trips were recent. Texas is tied with A&M as the leader on his Crystal Ball, and Oklahoma has one vote as well. Duvernay has been coy with his recruitment, but that hasn't stopped the offers from flying in.

S Deontay Anderson (Manvel, Texas)

9 of 11

Composite Rank: 25   S Rank: 2    Committed To: n/a

Offer List (34)

Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Grambling State, Houston, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Purdue, Rutgers, SMU, Stanford, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, UCLA, USC, Virginia Tech, Washington State

Where Will He Play?

Somewhere in the SEC West. Too vague? Fine: Alabama. But don't be surprised if Texas A&M or LSU snags Deontay Anderson, either. He visited College Station twice and Baton Rouge once during the regular season. Picking Alabama is sort of just a default setting. Recruits such as Anderson, who have no business leaving home to play in Tuscaloosa, have a habit of leaving home to play in Tuscaloosa.

TE Isaac Nauta (Buford, Georgia)

10 of 11

Composite Rank: 46    TE Rank: 1    Committed to: Florida State

Offer List (34)

Alabama, Arizona State, Auburn, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Missouri, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCF, USC, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech

Where Will He Play?

Florida State. Isaac Nauta committed to the Noles Dec. 15 after visiting Tallahassee in September, October and November. He made three trips to campus, saw how the offense used tight end Nick O'Leary and decided FSU was the right fit. That can change if Florida State struggles to replace O'Leary in 2015, but for now that seems unlikely.

WR Nate Craig-Meyers (Tampa, Florida)

11 of 11

Composite Rank: 10    WR Rank: 1    Committed to: Auburn

Offer List (43)

Alabama, Auburn, Arizona, Arizona State, Boston College, Cincinnati, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Massachusetts, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, NC State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, South Florida, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCF, UCLA, USC, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin

Where Will He Play?

Auburn. That's the school Nate Craig-Meyers has picked from his 43 (!!!) scholarship offers. But don't think that means this is over. "I want to talk to my mom about some things," Craig-Myers said after sending out a cryptic tweet in November, per Keith Niebuhr of 247Sports. He's visited UCF and Florida State since committing to Auburn in July.
