Zinedine Zidane Comments on Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and More

Rory MarsdenJan 19, 2015

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane believes Cristiano Ronaldo can go on to win more Ballon d'Or awards than Lionel Messi after the Portuguese superstar recently claimed the prestigious gong for the third time. The news comes via AS.

Messi has won the Ballon d'Or four times, but was convincingly beaten earlier this month by Ronaldo, per Squawka:

Ronaldo had a superlative 2014, winning the Champions League and breaking the European Cup scoring record in the process, per UEFA.com.

Zidane piled praise on the 29-year-old former Manchester United man, who he believes could go on to eclipse his Barcelona rival, per AS.

"He is going to win more Ballon d’Ors," Zidane said of Ronaldo. "What he is doing is from another planet. If he continues, he could end up winning more than Messi."

In the present La Liga campaign, Real are currently one point clear of second-placed Barca with a game in hand, Ronaldo having netted 28 goals compared to Messi's 19, per WhoScored.com.

However, Messi eclipsed Ronaldo on Sunday in the ongoing battle for supremacy between the two, bagging a hat-trick in the Blaugrana's 4-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna, Ronaldo scoring just the two against Getafe, per ESPN FC:

The continued excellence of the pair will go a long way to deciding the outcome of this season's La Liga and Zidane believes Real are well placed to win their first title since 2012, again per AS.

"Let’s hope the wins continue [for Real]. They are on the right track but there is still a lot at stake. Let’s wait and see what happens."

Certainly Madrid will look to take advantage of their game in hand against Sevilla in February, a match which could be vitally important in deciding the title race as Messi and Ronaldo continue in their bids to be regarded as the greatest players of all time.
