Real go into the game on the back of a 3-0 win over Espanyol in La Liga and with Cristiano Ronaldo having won the Ballon d’Or for the third time.
Ronaldo, per the BBC, has also defended team-mate Gareth Bale, who was jeered by the Real fans against Espanyol. Bale was criticised for shooting instead of setting up Ronaldo to score.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti is expected to field a strong side for the second leg. Speaking after the win over Espanyol, he said, per Real’s official website: “We have time to prepare for the match well. We’ll field our best team because we’re going to try to turn the tie around and do everything we can to reach the quarter-finals.”
Guillem Balague, per Sky Sports, had suggested after last week’s defeat that a lack of rotation has been hampering Real. Ancelotti subsequently made four changes for the win over Espanyol, but one was the goalkeeper and another was Fabio Coentrao, who was sent off.
Ronaldo should start against Atletico after being on the bench in the first leg. He is likely to be joined in the team by Bale, Toni Kroos, James Rodriguez, Isco and Karim Benzema as Real go in search of goals.
Atletico arguably fielded a weaker team in last week’s win over Real than the one that lost 3-1 to Barcelona on Sunday.
Fernando Torres made his second debut against Real, but he was replaced in the starting lineup by Mario Mandzukic against Barcelona.
Tiago Mendes, Turan and Koke were also among six changes made in total by Simeone between the two games.
Simeone could again go with a slightly mixed team, such as Jan Oblak in goal and with Torres up front, especially as Atletico are 2-0 ahead.
The first goal will be crucial, and Atletico will hope to keep Real out for as long as possible so that the jeers are not solely directed at Bale.
Prediction: Real Madrid 3 Atletico Madrid 1
