Nike Unveil Diamond-Studded Boots to Celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo captured the third Ballon d'Or of his illustrious career on Monday, so there was rightfully good cause for celebration. 

Nike, who sponsor Ronaldo, prepared for the Portuguese superstar's triumph in advance with some extremely extravagant boots. 

Not long after the win was announced, Nike unveiled a new pair of boots, the Mercurial CR7 Rare Gold. 

The title says it all really: The boots are rare (Ronaldo and only Ronaldo will wear them in his next match) and are embedded with micro-diamonds, a first in Nike history.

As per Nike's website:

The micro-diamonds are remnants from larger stones that are painstakingly perfected by craftsmen. As the diamonds are refined and the details sharpened, tiny pieces are cut away, leaving micro-diamonds behind as evidence of work in progress. 

The commitment to keep chipping away at something already impressive reminded Nike’s design team of Ronaldo’s work ethic. While many see Ronaldo as the best in the world, he sees room for improvement.
