Blue-Grey All-American Bowl 2015: Score, Top Recruits and Reaction

Adam WellsJan 10, 2015

The high school football showcase continued on Saturday night, with many of the nation's top college recruits descending on Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. This was all Grey team all the time, as it cruised to a 39-14 victory over the Blue.

Coming on the heels of the Under Armour All-America Game and the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl had a lot to live up to. The good news is there was plenty of talent on the field to match the hype, led by the dynamic offensive talent on the Grey side.

Running back Willie Parker, playing in his home city out of Carrollwood Day High School, scored the first touchdown for the Grey team from three yards out via The Tampa Tribune on Twitter:

In a fitting bookend for this game, Parker also had the final score of the game just for good measure, via Blue-Grey Football:

For the game, Parker was the offensive star. He finished with more than 100 yards and two touchdowns, per The Tampa Tribune:

Another shining star for the Grey team, Kelvin McKnight, seemed to be in the mix for game MVP, per Blue-Grey Football on Twitter:

However, as good as McKnight looked at times, it was Parker's night, and he was awarded the game's offensive MVP award:

Joining Parker on the MVP train was Brett Zanotto on defense. The Pennsylvania inside linebacker was a shining star for the Blue team and is committed to play college ball at Maryland starting next season:

McKnight is not a highly regarded recruit, ranked as the 210th wide receiver in the 2015 class, but a solid performance in this game does stand to enhance his recruiting profile, which is shaping up to include South Florida.

The other big performance for the Grey team came courtesy of running back Karan Higdon, who is committed to the University of Iowa. The No. 39 running back in the 2015 class stifled the momentum for the Blue team with a touchdown in the third quarter to make it a two-possession game, via Blue-Grey Football:

On the losing side, things weren't all bad for the Blue squad. It fell behind early and couldn't sustain any momentum on either side of the ball, but there were a few individual performances that stood out.

First, quarterback Will Pyburn had a strong day through the air with two touchdown passes. The second one, per Blue-Grey Football on Twitter, went to Ardell Brown after the defense forced a turnover:

In the scouting notes from this week of workouts, Sean Ceglinsky of BlueGreyFootball.com liked what he saw from Pyburn:

"When it comes to passing the eyeball test, the 6-5 and 200-pounder has never had a problem doing so," Ceglinsky wrote. "That said, it shouldn't come as a major surprise to learn that a handful of programs have expressed interest in the talented lefthander."

Among the defensive players to watch, Cody Endris had a strong game for the Grey team. As noted by the Pasco County Football Twitter account, the Tampa Catholic star had two fumble recoveries and a touchdown:

Carson Pearlman has had a unique path to this game. He's listed as a linebacker, but as noted by David Dorsey of The News-Press, Pearlman isn't one to be limited by a position:

"

Pearlman, listed at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, will play high school football for the last time. He has had a standout career for the Sentinels, rarely leaving the field. He started at quarterback as a sophomore and threw for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns. He started at running back as a junior and rushed for 1,100 yards.

As a senior, Pearlman started at wide receiver and caught 38 passes for 662 yards and 10 touchdowns. As a starting linebacker, he made a team-best 118 tackles.

"

In the same article, Pearlman's high school coach Tyler Gold told Dorsey that even he can't figure out which position suits the senior best:

"You know, I’m not sure," Gold said. "It depends on what you need. He can play either. I’m an offensive guy. He can catch the ball. He can run the ball. But at the same time, he led us in tackles this year."

Pearlman isn't a notable college prospect. There's no profile for him on 247Sports.com, and Dorsey's article says the senior will be taking visits to Marist College and Air Force Academy later this month.

Those are the kinds of players this game is for. The top recruits who have already announced their commitment or will in a public setting on national signing day will get their day in the sun, but Pearlman and many others needed this spotlight to showcase what they could do.

Forgetting the one-sided score, this game was a success because it gave these players another chance to make a statement that they belong in college football in some capacity. It's all about an opportunity in this sport, which these talented young men deserve.
