Smartest Bet to Make
There are a plethora of standard and prop bets that college football fans can make on the national championship, but the smartest bet will be the under. Currently set at 75 points (20-21 odds), betting the under should be an educated wager considering the play of both defensive units.
Casual fans have grown to know both Oregon and Ohio State as high-powered offensive units, but each program possesses an elite defensive group that has come up big over the last several weeks.
Amazingly, the Buckeyes finished the season ranked 26th in terms of points allowed per game (allowing just 22.1), but the Ducks were just one spot back in the standings finishing 27th overall (allowing 22.3.) The success of both defenses will limit the offensive chances for quarterbacks Marcus Mariota and Cardale Jones.
With so much pride on the line for the players, the coaching staff and the entire Oregon fanbase, Ducks head coach Mark Helfrich told Carlos Mendez of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (via NCAA.com):
"It's huge, huge for the state—huge, obviously, for our university, the community, everybody involved with that. The best thing we can do is stay focused on our process and our mission. But being part of this has been a ton of fun for the last several years. We know what it means to the various constituencies around this. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean much to Ohio State.
"
There is no discounting the offensive units for each team, though, and this bet is definitely an educated risk. Oregon has averaged 47.2 points per game this season, good enough for second in the nation.
Not to be outdone, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has overcome two season-ending injuries to starting quarterbacks to lead his team to an average of 45 points per game, putting the Buckeyes fifth in the rankings.
Both Oregon and Ohio State have been dominant on the offensive side of the ball all season, but in a championship game where each player will leave it all on the field, there won’t be as many opportunities for big plays.
The score will be high and the battle will be fierce, but the defensive units will play better than expected and keep the total score below 75 points. Make the wager with confidence.
Predicted Final Score: Oregon 40, Ohio State 30
