Cristiano Ronaldo's Agent Says Star May Play Major League Soccer

Tim DanielsJan 7, 2015

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo would seemingly have no shortage of options should he decide to leave the club when his contract expires in 2018. His agent states a move to the United States to play Major League Soccer would be a consideration.

MLSSoccer.com passed along comments agent Jorge Mendes made to French outlet Telefoot. He admitted there's no clarity to the situation at this point but said a move to the U.S. is possible:

"

Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes said a move stateside by the Real Madrid star and Portugal captain may be possible when his newly signed contract at the Santiago Bernabeu is up in 2018.

"After that, perhaps he will go to the United States. Only God knows what will happen," Mendes said in the report.

A lot will likely depend on the form Ronaldo is showcasing when 2018 rolls around. He remains one of the best players in the world right now. Whether that's still the case when he's 33, by which point most players begin to show some decline, is unknown.

It's also important to note the idea of going to the United States could always be a ploy by Mendes to create a bidding war situation as Ronaldo looks to land one more massive contract. MLS is always looking for marquee names to bring in while building its brand.

The latest example, as the report notes, is Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. He announced he'll head stateside after finishing the campaign with the Reds. He's on the downside of his career at age 34, but he remains an attractive option for MLS given his name recognition.

Ronaldo would be an even more intriguing possibility given his worldwide star power. We'll have to wait a few years to see if it's a realistic one, though.
