Under Armour All-America Game 2015: Commit Tracker and Recruit Highlights

Tyler DonohueJan 2, 2015

Six premier high school prospects from across the country set their commitments Friday afternoon at the Under Armour All-America Game.

The event, held in St. Petersburg, Florida, has featured several eventual NFL standouts, including Julio Jones, Jadeveon Clowney and A.J. Green. This year's matchup was filled with elite 2015 recruits who are ready to make an impact on the FBS championship chase next season.

Check out the following slides to find out where six of 2015's brightest stars are headed.

4-Star RB Ronald Jones (McKinney, Texas)

1 of 6

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 82 overall; No. 9 running back

High School: McKinney North High School

Where He's Headed: USC

Commitment Analysis

Ronald Jones decommitted from Oklahoma State in December, setting the stage for a compelling final stretch in his recruitment. The decision ultimately came down to USC and Notre Dame after each program hosted him on campus during recent weeks.

The running back position is of paramount importance for the Trojans in this cycle. Leading rusher Javorius Allen is a candidate to declare for the draft, and experience is limited on the depth chart behind him.

USC also holds a commitment from fellow Texas rusher Aca'Cedric Ware. Both players will be counted on to compete for early carries in Los Angeles.

Scouting Report

Jones is the rare breed of running back who can run you over and beat you in a footrace. Everything he does is full-throttle, and the results have been spectacular.

Jones is workmanlike between the tackles, driving downhill with tremendous anticipation and bursting through cutback lanes. Vision is a huge part of development for any rusher, and he appears more advanced in that capacity than many of his peers, rarely failing to exploit the space his linemen create.

Everything about his running style is smooth, from a compact upper body to fancy footwork that enables him to slide past defenders without sacrificing speed. He stays narrow while navigating through traffic, tucking the ball tightly and maintaining a low pad level.

Jones rushed for 4,400 yards and 67 touchdowns as an upperclassman.

4-Star DT Tim Settle (Manassas, Virginia)

2 of 6

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 78 overall; No. 11 defensive tackle

High School: Stonewall Jackson High School

Where He's Headed: Virginia Tech

Commitment Analysis

The Hokies finally secure a crucial in-state defensive commitment. There have been plenty of impressive prospects on Virginia Tech's home turf, but elite playmakers such as Da'Shawn Hand, Quin Blanding and Josh Sweat recently elected to take their talents elsewhere.

Tim Settle, who also considered Oklahoma State, USC and Washington State, provides some positive momentum in Blacksburg. The 6'3", 300-pound prospect presents a massive interior presence and credited Frank Beamer's staff for diligent recruiting.

"They've been there forever," Settle said during a live ESPN broadcast.

Scouting Report

Settle uses a massive physical foundation to fortify his upper-body efforts, which create a substantial push off the snap. He is an intelligent defender who keeps his vision in traffic and maintains his bearings when an offense throws misdirection plays at him.

Desired lateral footwork is in place, another facet of tight technique that suggests Settle could contribute early in college. He is tenacious in pursuit and maintains an adequate pad level that allows him to explode through ball-carriers unfortunate enough to come across his path.

Settle secured 85 tackles, including 17 for loss, and three sacks as a senior, per InsideNova.com.

4-Star DT Daron Payne (Birmingham, Alabama)

3 of 6

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 41 overall; No. 6 defensive tackle

High School: Shades Valley High School

Where He's Headed: Alabama

Commitment Analysis

Alabama adds another elite defender to America's top recruiting class. Daron Payne provides plenty of power at defensive tackle, standing at 6'2", 325 pounds, and hw complements the Crimson Tide's current collection of edge-oriented defensive line pledges.

It's another impressive in-state victory over Auburn. Mississippi State also made a strong push for his services.

He visited Tuscaloosa twice since Thanksgiving and apparently gathered enough information to seal the deal on a decision.

Scouting Report

Strength is the paramount component of Payne's game at this point. He powers through opponents with an effective bull rush and presents a wall along the interior.

His role as a nose tackle is likely to be maintained in college, though you could envision him lining up in a 2-technique position.

Payne stands strong against double-teams, allowing teammates to take advantage by clogging rushing lanes. Linebackers will love the space he clears for them up front.

5-Star WR Tyron Johnson (New Orleans, Louisiana)

4 of 6

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 21 overall; No. 2 wide receiver

High School: Warren Easton High School

Where He's Headed: LSU

Commitment Analysis

Les Miles and the Tigers held off several suitors for the in-state standout. Tyron Johnson included Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in his top three, while Georgia and Auburn were also viewed as contenders.

The 6'1", 191-pound playmaker is rated Louisiana's top overall prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings. He adds to an intriguing collection of young offensive talent at LSU, including 2014 receiver signees Malachi Dupre and Trey Quinn and freshman phenom Leonard Fournette.

The team remains in pursuit of former Alabama commit Daylon Charlot, another in-state target.

Scouting Report

Johnson is a diligent performer who maintains body control in every phase of the game. He's a natural pass-catcher who understands how to high-point the football and uses crisp routes to put himself in good position for incoming pass attempts.

His effort in traffic is outstanding, and his elite hands snag even poorly placed passes. Johnson can climb the ladder with elite leaping ability, which routinely comes in handy in the red zone.

He also understands how to attack the sidelines while ensuring possession is secured in the process. His skill set also suits him well as a kick returner, a role that likely awaits him in college.

Johnson caught more than 80 passes during each of his upperclassman campaigns. He racked up nearly 1,600 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns as a senior, per Rod Walker of The Advocate.

4-Star LB Anthony Wheeler (Dallas, Texas)

5 of 6

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 168 overall; No. 10 outside linebacker

High School: Skyline High School

Where He's Headed: Texas

Commitment Analysis

It's been a productive few weeks for Texas and head coach Charlie Strong, who adds Anthony Wheeler to an improving defensive class. The Longhorns landed fellow in-state linebackers Malik Jefferson and DeAndre McNeal in December.

"We have a bright future ahead," Wheeler said during his announcement on ESPN.

The 6'2", 225-pound prospect picked Texas over Big 12 conference rivals Baylor and Oklahoma. The Sooners were viewed as a favorite throughout much of his recruitment, so it's a significant recruiting victory for Strong and his staff.

Scouting Report

Wheeler is among the most physically impressive prospects in Texas and could ultimately transition into an edge-rusher role in college. He attacks opposing ground attacks with ferocity, scraping off blocks and getting downhill in a hurry.

Wheeler works well in tight space, exhibiting explosiveness in the trenches. Runners struggle to fool him with lateral movement because of his above-average tackling radius.

Quick-trigger redirection enables Wheeler to chase down players from across the field and come up with key second-chance tackles. He looks comfortable in pass coverage when called upon to drop back.

5-Star CB Kendall Sheffield (Missouri City, Texas)

6 of 6

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 18 overall; No. 3 cornerback

High School: Fort Bend Marshall High School

Where He's Headed: Alabama

Commitment Analysis

The rich get richer in Tuscaloosa, as Alabama lands Lone Star State standout Kendall Sheffield. He spurned opportunities at Texas A&M, Florida State and LSU to join the country's top-rated class.

Nick Saban has assembled quite a secondary haul during this recruiting cycle, including fellow 5-star defensive backs Minkah Fitzpatrick and Deionte Thompson. Alabama signed 5-star cornerbacks Tony Brown and Marlon Humphrey last February.

Another influx of top talent promises to increase the level of competition for spots in the Crimson Tide defensive backfield. Sheffield also has the potential to be a special teams weapon.

Scouting Report

Sheffield can shadow the speediest receivers this class has to offer and won't get beat deep as long as he reads the route correctly. An above-average wingspan adds to his range and prevents downfield pass attempts from connecting with the intended target.

Sheffield provides a slight cushion to receivers because he can rely on his speed in coverage and often baits quarterbacks to test him by providing a window he can quickly shut if an ill-advised pass heads his way. With his game-changing speed, he can turn a turnover into a touchdown in a flash.

Rarely targeted as a senior, Sheffield tallied 39 tackles, two interceptions and three blocked field goals, according to Corey Roepken of the Houston Chronicle.
