Boise State vs. Arizona: Score and Twitter Reaction for 2014 Fiesta Bowl

Tim KeeneyDec 31, 2014

Chris Petersen, Bryan Harsin, it doesn't seem to matter. If the Boise State Broncos play in the Fiesta Bowl, they're probably going to win—and they're going to do it in highly entertaining fashion.

Harsin capped an impressive first season as Petersen's replacement Wednesday at University of Phoenix Stadium, coaching the No. 20 Broncos to a thrilling 38-30 win over No. 10 Arizona, giving the school its third Fiesta Bowl victory in as many tries.

After the game, The Associated Press, (via ESPN) had Boise State receiver Chaz Anderson's thoughts on the win: "People think Boise State isn't a powerhouse program ... It feels good to be back to where we were in the past."

Although the Broncos offense sputtered out in the final two quarters, they still racked up 471 total yards thanks to an electrifying first half and held off a valiant late comeback attempt by the Wildcats.

Grant Hedrick threw for 309 yards and a touchdown, NFL-bound Jay Ajayi ran for 134 yards and three scores on 22 carries and Thomas Sperbeck caught 12 passes for 199 yards for Boise.

It wasn't quite Tony Romo-DeMarco Murray-Dez Bryant, but the latter of the trio approved of the Broncos' balanced attack:

Arizona responded with 492 total yards from a similarly balanced attack. Anu Solomon threw for 335 yards and a score, Cayleb Jones had 117 yards receiving and Nick Wilson added 86 and a touchdown on the ground.

But the redshirt freshman QB, whose inaccuracy was a major problem in the Wildcats' last six games, threw a pair of interceptions and a took late sack to halt his team's comeback attempt.

Boise State, which entered the game as a slight underdog, per Odds Shark, set an early tone that suggested it would to do whatever it wanted on offense. With a healthy mix of run and pass, the Broncos went at least 78 yards on their first three possessions, taking a 21-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game.

Harsin even drew up a re-creation of the Broncos' 2007 Fiesta Bowl magic, using the now-famous Statue of Liberty play for Ajayi's second touchdown run of the game:

By halftime, Hedrick already had 200 yards and Sperbeck and Ajayi each had 100 of their own. As ESPN Stats & Info noted, it was explosive play after explosive play for the Broncos:

The Wildcats offense settled in after an uneven start. Solomon and Wilson led a couple of long drives, cutting the margin to 31-17 by the time the teams entered the locker room.

After the intermission, though, both defenses finally decided to show up. Seven of the first half's initial eight possessions resulted in points, and the Pac-12 Network's Twitter feed pointed out the immense difference in production about halfway through the third quarter:

Keeping with the defensive theme, Broncos defensive back Donte Deayon came up with the next game-changing play, as he picked off Solomon and coasted 16 yards into the end zone.

ESPN provided a look at the pick-six:

The Wildcats didn't fold, though. Solomon answered with a 51-yard touchdown strike to Samajie Grant on the next possession, and then Arizona turned a fumble by Ajayi into three points to make it 38-30.

Arizona's defense, which was flying to the ball and held the Broncos to just 84 yards in the second half, came up with a couple more key stops. But after Jones made a spectacular jump-ball catch at Boise State's 8-yard line with less than a minute to go, the Broncos sacked Solomon and the clock ran out.

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff put it best after yet another instant-classic Fiesta Bowl involving Boise State:

While the loss is disappointing, Arizona has no reason to hang its head after its best season in nearly two decades. With Solomon, Wilson, Grant, Jones and Trey Griffey all returning as sophomores or juniors, this Wildcats offense will continue to be feared in 2015.

As for Boise State, there is some restructuring to do with Hedrick graduating and Ajayi off to the NFL draft. But with Harsin at the helm, it's clear the Broncos aren't going anywhere.
