Atletico Madrid vs. Deportivo: Score, Report and Reaction from La Liga Game

Alex LivieNov 30, 2014

Atletico Madrid kept up the pressure on Real Madrid with a 2-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna, but the match was overshadowed by an incident prior to the game which has left a fan fighting for his life.

Atletico were quick to condemn the violence, with the club issuing a statement on their website, but the game went ahead as scheduled.

Diego Simeone's men dominated the game throughout, and goals from Saul Niguez and Arda Turan secured the three points.

Atletico trail Real by four points in the Liga title race, and they, along with Barcelona, are threatening to pull away from the rest of La Liga.

They are comfortably the best three sides in La Liga and one of them will lift the title. Atletico's form has improved following a sticky start to the season, but it had to with Real in such a rich vein of form.

Atletico made a typically effervescent start and came close to an early opening goal, as Mario Mandzukic climbed high to meet a cross from Koke. The forward made superb contact, but the effort thudded against the post and away to safety.

Atletico may have lost the goals of Diego Costa, but they still have the tremendous work ethic that helped them lift the Liga title last term.

Depor were solid in defence, but Atletico kept probing and the opening goal came in 43 minutes.

It was no surprise that the goal came from a set piece. Koke delivered a fizzing ball that Mandzukic flicked on at the near post. Saul continued his run to the back post and was in perfect position to glance a header into the net.

Atletico continued to press, and Saul came close to a second goal at the 55-minute mark, but his shot was deflected over the bar.

From the resulting corner, Atletico doubled their lead. Deportivo could only clear the corner to the edge of the box, where Turan was on hand to let fly with a shot that was deflected past Fabricio by Modibo Diakite.

"

Two goals conceded which haven't been through any of our errors, just poor luck. I'm happy with today's performance thus far.

Depor did not have the attacking spark to mount any sort of revival, and Atletico kept their shape to secure a welcome clean sheet.

Atletico will now turn their attention to a midweek Copa del Rey meeting with L'Hospitalet, but the thoughts of many will be on the clashes before the game.
