5 Biggest Blunders in World Football This Weekend

Karl MatchettNov 16, 2014

Once more, we're back on an international break, but as ever, that doesn't mean that the blunders and the mistakes from the world of football come to an end. Far from it, in fact. These ones are perhaps even more high profile because they come on the international stage.

Here, we've looked at the fixtures around the globe over the elongated weekend, selecting out the instants and the moments that players would doubtless just rather forget happened at all.

Here's our five biggest blunders, taking in goalkeeper howlers, flummoxed forwards and everything in between.

Hannes Halldorsson

1 of 5

We'll start with one or two keeper blunders, beginning with Iceland's Hannes Halldorsson.

Iceland led 1-0 against Czech Republic in their weekend qualifier for Euro 2016, but they ended up losing 2-1 after a second-half own goal by Emil Hallfredsson. It was down to his keeper's inability to react that the midfielder suffered that fate.

A deflected cross should easily have been dealt with by Halldorsson, but he couldn't sort his feet in time and conceded what turned out to be the winning goal.

Gianluigi Buffon

2 of 5

One of the world's best goalkeepers also figures in as Italy No. 1 Gianluigi Buffon failed to make a routine stop for his nation against Croatia in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

A low shot from Ivan Perisic was well struck but almost straight at the keeper, but as he dived down to make the save, he misjudged the pace on the ball, and it slipped straight under his body for the equalising goal in an eventual 1-1 draw.

See Buffon's howler here.

Semih Kaya

3 of 5

Turkey were swept aside by Brazil in a friendly on Wednesday, with the South American side running out comfortable 4-0 winners.

As if that scoreline alone wasn't enough, Turkey's Semih Kaya scored a needless and comedic own goal as he showed a complete lack of awareness of his surroundings, stretching to cut out a low cross and only succeeding in volleying a finish past his own keeper.

See the own goal here.

Apologies for the lack of clarification over who is involved here, but a lack of teamsheets makes identification rather difficult as Morocco beat Benin 6-1 on Thursday.

The victorious African side had no trouble in taking an early advantage and going on to complete something of a rout, but their No. 24 didn't manage to get himself on the scoresheet...and no wonder, with finishing like this. With the team already three goals to the good, he managed to air-kick one golden chance and then scuff a second easy opportunity straight at a defender seconds later—before a team-mate finished the job properly for him.

Watch the misses—and the resulting goal—right here.

Orjan Nyland

5 of 5

We finish as we start—with a goalkeeper—this time from Norway's Orjan Nyland.

Estonia don't pick up too many victories against decent opposition so it was a surprise to see them take a 1-0 win over Norway in a friendly during the week, especially with Norway doing well in the Euro qualifiers. Estonia did win though—thanks largely to a failed attempt by Nyland to stop a routine low shot, letting the ball squirm through his grasp and into the net behind him.
