Per Bryan Fischer of CBS Sports, McCaffery is set to make $1.8 million in base salary this season after leading Iowa to the NCAA Tournament last year:
Iowa athletic director Gary Barta talked about how important McCaffery has been to the university and bringing the basketball program back into the national conversation, via Rick Brown of The Des Moines Register:
"When he was hired, I said that as he continues to grow this and we continue to have success, my vision and goal is for him to be the most successful basketball coach in America. And as he's doing it, I'm going to continue to work on his contract and show progress. So yes, we have been in discussions.
"
Since taking over the Iowa basketball team in 2010, McCaffery has won 74 games and led the program to the NCAA Tournament last year for the first time since 2006. The Hawkeyes lost to Tennessee in the first round, but it was an essential step in the progression of this program.
McCaffery's Hawkeyes are starting this season ranked No. 25 in The USA Today Coaches Poll. They have the talent and leadership to improve on last year's 20-win campaign and make real noise in the NCAA Tournament, so this is a well-deserved extension.
