Kevin Garnett Discusses Interest in Purchasing Minnesota Timberwolves
Kevin Garnett has interest in one day being part of a group that owns the Minnesota Timberwolves. Per Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports, the 38-year-old, 15-time All-Star said this after his current team, the Brooklyn Nets, fell 107-99 to the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night:
"I want to buy the Timberwolves. Put a group together and perhaps some day try to buy the team. That's what I want."
Garnett spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Minnesota organization, where he was awarded the league MVP award in 2004. Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com), Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said in 2012 that he was interested in adding a minority owner.
At least one person supports Garnett's desire: Nets general manager Billy King.
"He would be one of the best owners in the NBA because he understands what the players need and he understands what it takes to be successful in the NBA,” King told Spears.
On the financial side, it's feasible Garnett could be a candidate for minority owner if he's interested. Over his future Hall of Fame career, Garnett has raked in $315 million dollars in salaries, per Spotrac, and he has made even more in endorsement deals.
Per Spears, Garnett cited history, his ties to the organization and current head coach and part-owner Flip Saunders as personal draws back to the Timberwolves. Garnett is currently averaging 8 points and 8 rebounds in as many games this season.
He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
