Best of the Best: A Fantasy Football Mock Draft
Recently the guys from Fantasy Football Writers With Hair invited me to participate in an "Experts Mock Draft."
I was gifted the first pick of the draft, and by the end the guys from FFWWH were crowning my squad, "Best team in the draft."
Drafting is as much luck as it is strategy. Guys must fall to you—especially when picking on the turn—but you also need to foresee who will and won't be there by the next time you pick and how you will address injury concerns as they arise.
Here's my draft, let me know what you think.
1. Adrian Peterson, RB—Really tough pick here. I had Mike Vick and Bret Favre in my queue but decided to draft pure (purple and) gold. Anyone who says Turner should be No. 1 should forfeit their pick.
20. Brian Westbrook, RB—I will admit that I am worried about injuries but that being said there's plenty to like about Westy as the 14th RB drafted, especially considering Pierre Thomas and Ryan Grant were the next two RBs off the board. If you're going to draft Westbrook, be sure to move LeSean McCoy up your rankings.
21. Tom Brady, QB—I have promised myself that I will draft Brady in the third round every chance I get, and with the turn it's almost certain to happen. He's the top fantasy QB in my eyes and I would even consider him in the second round given the situation.
40. Terrell Owens, WR—I'm not in love with TO's potential on the Bills but I think he is going to look to prove some things up north. He is a fierce competitor and he knows his stardom is connected to his success on the field. Love him or hate him, he's a beast with the ball in his hands.
41. Wes Welker, WR—Welker seems like the most underrated guy at the top of the draft. He's almost guaranteed for 100/1000 and although he is a No. 2, he's the best in the NFL.
60. Antonio Gates, TE—I really don't like to draft TEs early but Reggie Bush and Larry Johnson went a few picks earlier and it never hurts to have a touchdown machine.
61. Chris Wells, RB—Wells is a solid sleeper pick and he will get plenty of carries in Arizona. The rookie class isn't as big as last year's but we could still see one to four guys tip the 1000 yard mark depending on injuries. Wells has the best opportunity to do it of the bunch.
80. Lee Evans, WR—If they're not going to throw it to TO, it's going to Evans right? He's a bit of an all-or-nothing receiver but with the secondary paying extra close attention to Owens, I like Evan's ability to exploit the defense.
81. Santana Moss, WR—I loved Moss last season and a love him this year just as much. Jim Zorn did a good job of getting Moss the ball in situations where he could make big plays and the Redskins play plenty of big games int he NFC East. We know what big time players do in big time games.
100. Donnie Avery, WR—Avery is a guy I am targeting heavily this year and I think he can even be worthy of a starting spot. As my fifth WR, I love the pick.
101. LeSean McCoy, RB—With Westbrook on my roster I could not allow someone else to draft McCoy. The injury report will tell you who to start, and yes, McCoy is worth starting when the time is right.
120. Baltimore Ravens, D—The Ravens lost their DC and he took and inside backer with him but the core of Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, and Ed Reed is still there. I'm a big fan of this point-scoring defense that takes pride in stopping the run.
121. Philadelphia Eagles, D—Back to back D's, am I crazy? Like a fox. It can be very powerful to have two high-scoring defenses on your roster because you can interchange them with the best matchups. I made the pick before Jim Johnson passed away, but I'm thinking Philly will be inspired.
140. Chad Pennington, QB—I was targeting David Garrard as my second QB but he was off the board. I will take the ultra-efficient Pennington as a backup, he is a safe start almost any week.
141. Laurence Maroney, RB—This pick was out on a limb here but Maroney was a top 30 talent last season and if he can bounce back, it's a great pick for nothing. If not, I can drop him with little pain.
160. Kris Brown, K—Drafting Kris Brown allows you to drop an absurd Rihanna joke, alienating yourself from the rest of the league before the season starts. He can kick too.
