NFL Power Rankings Week 11: Latest Outlook and 2014-15 Super Bowl Odds

Chris RolingNov 10, 2014

The contenders have slowly begun to pull away from the pack as things approach Week 11.

As a result, the week's NFL power rankings continue to further resemble something familiar as Denver, Seattle, Green Bay and a host of others take care of business with the playoffs in mind.

For now, there is a bit of peace when it comes to rankings. The thing is, the teams near the top will continue to get each team's best the rest of the way, as there is no better thing than playing spoiler—just ask the New York Jets.

32. Oakland Raiders (0-9)

For just a moment, the Oakland Raiders had a 10-6 lead on the Denver Broncos this past weekend.

Then they gave it away en route to a 41-17 loss.

The Raiders are a fun team to watch as rookie quarterback Derek Carr continues to figure things out, but wins were never expected to be bountiful this season. The draft cannot arrive soon enough.

31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-8)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith seems asleep at the wheel and was heavily criticized for switching back to veteran quarterback Josh McCown this past weekend.

It worked, at least in a way. McCown threw for 301 yards with a pair each of touchdowns and interceptions. To personify how little the overall roster is actually performing, though, he also led the team in rushing with 39 yards.

Stick a fork in the Buccaneers.

30. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-9)

It is disheartening to watch Gus Bradley's Jacksonville Jaguars take the field each week.

Not because this version is anywhere near as bad as some in recent history, but because the team continues to fight and clearly has the talent to compete with most teams in the league.

A lack of experience leads to a lack of execution, though. Jacksonville will continue to struggle as a young roster learns.

29. Tennessee Titans (2-7)

It takes a pretty bad team to come out of a bye and get blown away by 14 points, so it makes sense the Tennessee Titans did just that this past weekend.

The team turned to rookie Zach Mettenberger in the eventual loss to Baltimore, and he wound up throwing for 179 yards with a touchdown and interception.

It is hard to fault the LSU product too much—he was sacked five times.

28. Chicago Bears (3-6)

Chicago's season is over.

Weeks of drama surrounding the team have birthed back-to-back allowances of more than 50 points. As ESPN's Adam Schefter notes, it is quite the historic feat:

The talent on the roster in Chicago is noteworthy. Coaching, execution and desire to win, not so much.

27. New York Jets (2-8)

The New York Jets won the Super Bowl in Week 10, so long as fans define the Super Bowl as a mediocre team snapping an eight-game losing streak.

A win is a win, though, and now the Jets can hit the bye comfortable with Michael Vick under center. He threw for 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns while adding another 39 yards on the ground in a win against Pittsburgh.

Vick is an ideal veteran leader to close out the season in New York.

26. Atlanta Falcons (3-6)

The Atlanta Falcons sure love the Buccaneers this year considering two of their wins have come against the lowly squad from Florida.

Of course, that says more about Atlanta than anything.

Matt Ryan still only managed 219 passing yards and a score. The team's inability to get in the end zone or prevent quality teams from doing so suggests there is a painful finish to the season ahead for the Falcons.

25. Washington (3-6)

Other than a miserable record and a loss before the bye week, Washington has other issues to worry about, as noted by Around The NFL:

Robert Griffin III's return was encouraging, as he threw for 251 yards with a touchdown and an interception, but it is going to take another uptick in production for him to quell whispers about his ability to lead the team.

24. Carolina Panthers (3-5-1)

If Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are going to salvage this season and make a run at a weak NFC South, Monday's encounter with the Philadelphia Eagles is a must-win game.

The Panthers defense is suddenly a weakness, ranking 19th against the pass and 27th against the rush. The result is more pressure than ever on Newton, but outside of rookie wideout Kelvin Benjamin (40 catches, 589 yards, five touchdowns), he continues to receive little help.

The state of the division has kept the Panthers alive, but at some point they will have to rise to the occasion.

23. New York Giants (3-6)

The New York Giants are an injured mess that continues to see the season slip away.

It would be nice if Eli Manning could keep the turnovers to a minimum, but most concerning is the league's worst run defense that just allowed Seattle's Marshawn Lynch to rush for 140 yards and four touchdowns.

That is not a lack of talent or too many mistakes. It is a simple lack of a desire to put up a fight.

22. St. Louis Rams (3-6)

It may be over for the St. Louis Rams.

Before Week 10, the Rams were that chippy team that gave the best of the best trouble as they continued to fight for pride and little else. The team beat Seattle and San Francisco while playing a number of others closely.

This past weekend was ugly, though, as the Rams made the trip to the desert and got turned away by Arizona, 31-14. In the process, the team even let backup Drew Stanton toss a touchdown.

Things get much worse next week when Peyton Manning pays the team a visit.

21. Minnesota Vikings (4-5)

Do not look now, but the Minnesota Vikings are on a two-game winning streak.

Now, the team needed overtime to upend miserable Tampa Bay and got just a three-point win over Washington, but winning is winning at this point.

In a midst of a delicate rebuild and stricken with adversity most teams do not have to hurdle, the Vikings have done quite well for themselves in terms of building a foundation for the future.

20. Houston Texans (4-5)

Coming off a bye, the Houston Texans are hanging on for dear life in second place in the AFC South.

To remedy a pass offense that ranks 29th in terms of yards per game, the team is turning to a new man under center, per Schefter:

For coach Bill O'Brien, it was the only way to salvage things with Ryan Fitzpatrick playing as most thought he would (11 touchdowns, eight interceptions).

19. Buffalo Bills (5-4)

One would think that a team coming off a bye would not allow 14 points in the final quarter at home to give up a large lead, but this is the Buffalo Bills.

Outside of wins over Miami and Detroit this year, Buffalo's record is inflated thanks to matchups with Chicago, Minnesota and the Jets.

With Kyle Orton under center, these Bills may not make it much further. Week 11 is telling, as the Miami Dolphins welcome the Bills to town and look for revenge.

18. New Orleans Saints (4-5)

The New Orleans Saints are not at rock bottom just yet, but getting 292 yards and three scores from Drew Brees and another 120 yards from Mark Ingram and still losing is going to hurt in the long run.

Add in the fact that this most recent loss came at home, and the Saints are flirting with disaster.

Good news, though—if the Saints can keep their heads above water in the coming weeks, the team finishes the season against Chicago, Atlanta and Tampa Bay, meaning contention in the weak NFC South is very much a possibility.

17. San Diego Chargers (5-4)

At first pass, the San Diego Chargers are one of the coldest teams in the league.

While Philip Rivers and Co. have lost three straight, it is important to keep in mind that they came against Kansas City, Denver and Miami.

Then again, that last one was a 37-0 drubbing. But after a bye week, there are few better remedies to issues than a matchup with Oakland. Rivers (20-8 touchdowns-interceptions ratio) and Co. will get back on track.

16. Cleveland Browns (6-3)

Say hello to the team that rests in first place in the AFC North.

The Browns got a staggering win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football last week, which saw all three top running backs score touchdowns.

The concern, though, is twofold. For one, Cincinnati historically stinks on prime time. Two, Brian Hoyer only threw for 198 yards and leaned on the ground game. There is no question he is the starter moving forward, but will he be able to gun the team to a win when asked?

15. Baltimore Ravens (6-4)

Despite two AFC North losses in a row, the Baltimore Ravens continue to stay alive thanks to the shaky stature of the division.

It helps that the team played Tennessee last weekend, though. That was a simple enough win, and Justin Forsett continues to look like the key player in the backfield thanks to his 112 yards and two touchdowns.

With balance like that, not to mention one of the league's best run defenses, the Ravens are a key team to watch down the stretch.

14. San Francisco 49ers (5-4)

It is a sad state of affairs for one of the league's most talented rosters when they have to go out and save their season in Week 10.

To the San Francisco 49ers' credit, they did manage to accomplish the feat.

Not only did the team get a win, it was of the rare variety in New Orleans. The staff also decided it was a good idea to get back to somewhat of a run-first approach, which caused Frank Gore to find 81 yards and a score.

If the team follows that same formula the rest of the way, watch out.

13. Pittsburgh Steelers (6-4)

It is not time to slap the panic button on the Pittsburgh Steelers just yet, but be sure to keep it handy.

Just ask coach Mike Tomlin, per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

A letdown against the Jets is mostly concerning because the Steelers got punched in the mouth and never responded. Now that teams have an idea that works, expect more difficult tests in the coming weeks.

12. Cincinnati Bengals (5-3-1)

Week 10 may signal the beginning of the end for the Bengals.

The aforementioned Thursday loss was not just bad, it was 24-3 bad. In the process, Andy Dalton reaffirmed what most already knew—the TCU product can single-handedly hold the entire team back.

A 10-of-33 mark for 86 yards and three interceptions for a 2.0 quarterback rating has a way of doing that. Cincinnati has nowhere else to turn, either.

11. Miami Dolphins (5-4)

Miami had a three-game streak snapped this past weekend, but it is difficult to complain about a loss in Detroit.

The problem is, it seems the only way the Dolphins are going to get into the postseason is with a wild card, so winning those critical matchups is a must from here on out.

With the league's second-best pass defense, a top-10 run defense and Ryan Tannehill tossing seven touchdowns to two interceptions over the course of his last four games, a return to form is surely in the cards.

10. Seattle Seahawks (6-3)

The Seattle Seahawks have been rather shaky as of late at home, but there seems to be no better way to turn things around than with a matchup against the Giants.

As Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times notes, the team is getting back to its roots in order to turn things around:

Given the trio of talented backs on the roster, the Seahawks can hang with any team so long as the offensive line stays healthy.

9. Indianapolis Colts (6-3)

The Indianapolis Colts were on bye in Week 10, but there is not much the globe does not know about the team at this point.

Andrew Luck is once again an MVP candidate and has completed a career-high 63.6 percent of his passes. His defense quietly ranks in the top 10 against the rush.

So far, the team's only losses have come to Denver, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The Colts are contenders, and Luck finally has some help.

8. Philadelphia Eagles (6-2)

Mark Sanchez is the quarterback of a 6-2 team that universally ranks well when it comes to power rankings.

It is a scary thought, but perhaps things will not be so bad now that he is in Chip Kelly's quarterback-friendly scheme with a wealth of weapons such as Jeremy Maclin to utilize.

Monday will tell the globe everything it needs to know about the Eagles' chances at contention with Sanchez under center.

7. Kansas City Chiefs (6-3)

Now would be the time to stop sleeping on Andy Reid's Kansas City Chiefs.

Now winners of four straight, 14 points in the final frame in Buffalo has revealed the true character of the Chiefs.

Nick Jacobs of TWC SportsChannel KC put it best:

Thanks to an elite ground game that ranks in the top five and the league's top pass defense, these Chiefs can play with any team.

6. Dallas Cowboys (7-3)

Tony Romo was right back at it in Week 10 for the Dallas Cowboys—not that he needed to be.

Romo was his usual self with 246 yards and a trio of scores, although mobility seemed to be a minor issue.

If the Cowboys are lucky, Romo's health will hold. The team now gets a bye to prepare for a season-ending stretch that includes Philadelphia twice and Indianapolis. Playoffs, obviously, hang in the balance.

5. Green Bay Packers (6-3)

The Green Bay Packers are a very good team, but it would be wise to not read entirely too much into a 55-14 shellacking of Chicago this past weekend in which Aaron Rodgers threw for six touchdowns.

What is notable when it comes to the Packers is that Rodgers is no longer doing it on his own. He is quietly flanked by one of the league's best pass defenses, a scary recipe for the rest of the NFL considering most teams need to take to the air to keep up.

A season-ending battle with Detroit continues to grow in importance each week.

4. Detroit Lions (7-2)

Now on a four-game winning streak, there is something even more impressive about the dominant Detroit Lions.

ESPN Stats & Info provides the note:

Detroit continues to win whether or not Reggie Bush and Calvin Johnson are healthy. Matthew Stafford has plenty of weapons to work with, and he is backed by a defense that ranks among the top five against the pass and rush.

3. Denver Broncos (7-2)

Manning and the Broncos had what amounted to a bye week in Week 10 thanks to a trip to Oakland.

Manning continues to hum right along, most recently throwing for 340 yards and five scores.

The defense that complements Manning is why most should be afraid of the Broncos, though. The team made plenty of offseason additions that continue to jell, which has produced the league's top run defense.

A deadly balance is the last thing the league wanted to see Denver obtain.

2. Arizona Cardinals (8-1)

The Arizona Cardinals continued to roll in Week 10, but lost starting quarterback Carson Palmer to a serious knee issue in the process.

A popular theory, though, seems to be that the Cardinals will win in spite of the quarterback situation. Sports Illustrated's Andrew Perloff provides one instance of this thought process:

It is tough to argue given the team's wealth of weapons and a top run defense. The league will find out very quickly if Stanton is up to task thanks to an encounter with Detroit in Week 11.

1. New England Patriots (7-2)

Want to know just how hot the New England Patriots are right now?

ESPN's Field Yates has a good measuring stick:

But in all seriousness, the Patriots are playoff bound just a few weeks removed from blowing away Denver. Tom Brady and the offense can play with any team, while the stingy defense does enough to keep the opposition at bay.

Through 10 weeks, there is no better team.
