UAB AD Addresses Allegations
Nick Birdsong of AL.com was first to report UAB was investigating whether anything improper occurred.
"We're are aware of the allegation and looking into the matter," said UAB Athletic Director Brian Mackin. "That is the only comment we will have at this time."
The problems stem from an anonymous writer named Incarcerated Bob, who alleged Winston sandbagged the first half of an eventual 42-31 win over the Louisville Cardinals. The Seminoles star did so in order to help Rabb, who was a teammate of Winston's in high school, win $5,000.
Bleacher Report's Matt Miller questioned the veracity of the report:
B/R's Barrett Sallee also felt the allegations are spurious:
Regardless of the outcome of UAB's investigation, the timing couldn't be much worse for the Blazers. They play Louisiana Tech and Marshall in their next two games. As if playing the two best teams in Conference USA isn't enough, now the team must deal with this added distraction.
Winston will likely be unaffected by the allegations, but they'll provide more fuel for his critics given his off-field history already.
