Asteras Tripolis vs. Tottenham: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Gianni VerschuerenNov 5, 2014

Asteras Tripolis will be out for revenge for the 5-1 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Tottenham on Matchday 3, hosting Spurs in Greece on Thursday in a pivotal Europa League Group C clash.

Tottenham hold a one-point lead over the Greeks heading into the match, and Thursday's winning side will hold the advantage going into the final two group-stage matches, as only two of four clubs will advance to the next round.

The result of Matchday 3 means Spurs will be favourites, but at home and facing the prospect of elimination, Asteras will come out and attack Mauricio Pochettino's men early and often.

Preview

Spurs may have had it easy at White Hart Lane in Week 3, but Asteras will give the club a whole different challenge at the Kolokotronis. The Greeks bounced back from the 5-1 drubbing with a win over Crete before holding Champions League competitors Olympiacos to a draw, evidence their form is improving.

Tottenham's form has been spotty all season, meanwhile, losing to Newcastle United before recording back-to-back wins over Brighton and Aston Villa. Spurs didn't look at all convincing in either of those wins, as the pressure continues to mount on Pochettino.

The pounding the club laid on Asteras was impressive, but it only masked Spurs' early-season struggles, not solve them. The squad has still won just four league matches this season, conceding more than scoring in the process, via WhoScored.com.

It's a similar story in the Europa League, where Spurs sit second in their group thanks to the 5-1 win over Tripolis. The two draws played out before Week 3 were as disappointing as they come, and Partizan Belgrade have yet to earn points against any of the other teams in Group C.

Pochettino is starting to feel the pressure, and it's becoming more evident every week. As shared by the Premier League's Twitter account, he might give the fans what they've been asking for weeks—more playing time for Harry Kane:

The youngster bagged a hat-trick in his last Europa League outing and scored a (lucky) winner against Aston Villa, and the Tottenham faithful must hope Kane will carry his excellent form into Thursday's fixture.

The visitors will be without Hugo Lloris following his red card in Week 3, likely opening the door for Michel Vorm to show what he can do. After recording a clean sheet against Brighton, Tripolis give him an opportunity to show what he can do in a high-profile match.

Bleacher Report's Thomas Cooper wonders whether a good performance could lead to more minutes:

"

With Lloris suspended for the return game against Asteras Tripolis, 31-year-old Vorm will almost certainly play next week. A good performance might convince his boss to stick him for the remaining group games too. His role in the competition so far suggests Vorm will play in the Capital One Cup quarterfinal versus Newcastle United in mid-December.

"

The hosts' domestic form has greatly improved in the past few weeks, but on talent, Tottenham are still the far superior team. If Pochettino can instill the fire his squad showed late against Villa, Thursday's match should result in a win.

If Spurs do emerge victorious, the gap between them and the Greeks would be four points, and with just two matches left to play, qualification for the knockout stages would be well within reach.

Prediction: Asteras Tripolis 1-2 Tottenham
