5 Biggest Blunders in World Football This Weekend: Nov. 1-2

Karl MatchettNov 2, 2014

Another week, another collection of howlers from the world of football.

From defensive errors to moments of officiating madness, own goals and ill-judged shots, we've taken in the best of the worst around the game's most recent fixtures to bring you our regular run-down on who needs to hang their head in shame.

It's our five biggest blunders of the weekend! Enjoy. Or don't, if your team features here.

Jose Callejon

1 of 5

Spanish forward Jose Callejon might be the top scorer in the Italian Serie A right now, but that doesn't mean everything he touches finds the back of the net.

During the week, he managed to improbably miss from a grand total of about 10 centimetres, spooning a shot over the bar when it looked almost impossible to miss. Still, his Napoli side won this weekend, with Callejon on the scoresheet against Roma to atone for this blunder.

Check out Callejon's one-yard wonder miss right here.

Bizarre Belgian Referee Awards Goal

2 of 5

There's not much we can say about this except it wasn't a goal.

This is Genk beating Lierse 3-0 in the top flight from Belgium during the week. It's all very routine...except for the small matter of Herve Kage's strike, of course—the second in the game.

Maybe it's time for goal-line technology in the Pro League...

The Entire Liverpool Defence

3 of 5

Liverpool's defenders have not exactly covered themselves in glory this season, and Saturday's defeat at Newcastle United was another exhibition of such.

Alberto Moreno made the "error," which gave Newcastle their winning goal, but no less than three of the back-line players managed to actually make mistakes.

Firstly, Glen Johnson decided to shoot from 30 yards on his left foot, with four defenders in the way, leading to the Newcastle counter.

Racing back, Johnson failed to make a challenge or stop the cross coming in, before centre-back Dejan Lovren bizarrely abandoned his station in the six-yard box, racing out and letting the pass roll into space behind him.

There was Moreno waiting to mis-control and let Ayoze Perez rattle home the only goal of the game.

Check out the top video here for the goal.

Double Feature Own Goals

4 of 5

We really, really wanted to bring you this magnificent own goal from the A-League in Australia, having missed it at the time, but it's from more than a week ago, and that would be cheating. (Seriously, go see it, it's amazing.)

So instead, Villarreal's Manu Trigueros is the unfortunate focus of our attention, with his all-action display ensuring a goal at both ends in the defeat to Valencia this weekend.

His lung-bursting run, full of good intentions in the first half of the game, only served to see him slide to intercept a low cross, and indeed do so...only to artfully evade four bodies in a crowded penalty area—and his goalkeeper—and slot the ball inside the far post.

Kick Your Team-Mate When You're Down

5 of 5

Borussia Dortmund have really struggled this season and currently reside in the relegation zone, an unthinkable position given their appearance in the Champions League final two years ago and finishing runners-up in the Bundesliga last season.

They were beaten 2-1 by rivals Bayern Munich at the weekend, with the worst moment of calamity being a misjudgement on the part of goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller.

Looking to take a goal kick out of his hands and launch the ball upfield, he instead rocketed it from just a few yards away into the back of team-mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan's head, to the obvious shock (and hurt, probably) of the Armenian.

It seems that nothing at all can go BVB's way at the moment. Watch the kick here.
