Redskins vs. Cowboys: Score and Twitter Reaction from Monday Night Football

Tim KeeneyOct 27, 2014

The unpredictability of the NFL was on full display Monday night, as Colt McCoy and the Washington Redskins went into Dallas and put a stop to the Cowboys' six-game winning streak.

McCoy completed 25 of 30 passes for 299 yards, leading a game-winning drive in overtime to propel Washington to a thrilling 20-17 victory.

The performance put McCoy into exclusive company in 2014, per ESPN Stats & Info:

DeMarco Murray tallied 221 total yards (141 rushing, 80 receiving) for Dallas, but the Cowboys gave up 409 total yards of offense, allowed five sacks and spent a portion of the second half without Tony Romo, who suffered an injury to his back.

Fortunately, the injury doesn't appear serious, according to Jason Garrett, via NFL.com's Ian Rapoport:

For much of the first half, Washington deployed a bend-but-don't break strategy on defense. The Cowboys racked up 218 yards and Murray was consistently breaking off huge gains, but the result was only a 7-3 Dallas lead going into the intermission.

A large reason for the lack of scoring was a pair of fumbles. Joseph Randle and Murray put the ball on the ground on back-to-back possessions, with the latter coming inside Washington's 10-yard line.

Murray leads all running backs in most categories this season, but his most recent turnover put him at the top of an undesired list, per ESPN Stats & Info:

As The Dallas Morning News' David Moore noted, Murray's giveaway came when he was fighting for extra yardage after a 36-yard gain:

Of course, fighting for extra yardage isn't always such a bad thing. Dez Bryant proved just that late in the second quarter, making a shoestring grab and barreling through a pair of defenders for the first touchdown of the game.

NFL's Twitter feed provided a look at one of the best five-yard receptions you'll see:

Washington came out of the locker room with a clear game plan: Give Dallas some of its own medicine. After just five carries for 11 yards in the first half, Alfred Morris took three attempts for 39 and a touchdown on the very first drive of the third quarter.

It was a methodical 80-yard march on eight plays, with nearly all of the production coming on the ground, as illustrated by ESPN's Tim McMahon:

Dallas' problems escalated in a major way on the following possession, as Romo took a knee to his surgically repaired back and was forced to leave the game.

Brandon Weeden replaced him, setting up a truly unexpected quarterback matchup, as USA Today's Lindsay Jones noted:

And as everyone obviously predicted, each of the former Browns QBs proceeded to orchestrate 80-yard touchdown drives.

McCoy finished his with a seven-yard scoring run into the heart of Dallas' defense, while Weeden responded with a 25-yard connection with Jason Witten to make it 17-17.

Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo, who is out for the year with a torn pectoral, was certainly enthused with McCoy's play:

The wild, roller-coaster quarterback ride continued, as Romo displayed his immense toughness, returning from the locker room just in time for an attempted two-minute drill.

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff wondered about the decision from a long-term perspective:

Romo's first drive back puttered out and was lucky not to result in a turnover or safety, leading to overtime.

The Redskins got the ball first in the extra period, and McCoy continued to move the ball efficiently. He hooked up with Jordan Reed on a pair of crucial completions, and Kai Forbath finished the drive with a 40-yard field goal to give Washington a 20-17 advantage.

Fox Sports' Matt Mosley put it simply:

The Redskins defense came up massive on the ensuing possession, forcing a turnover on downs after Dallas questionably abandoned the run, securing the win.

Washington, which improves to 3-5, heads to Minnesota next Sunday to take on the 3-5 Vikings, while Dallas, 6-2, will try to right the ship against the Arizona Cardinals, who now have the best record in the NFC.

With each team's quarterback position in flux thanks to injury, though, the ensuing week may be just as interesting as next Sunday.
