Buffalo BIlls' Kyle Orton Throws 4 TDs Among 10 Completions

Bleacher Report MilestonesOct 28, 2014

Buffalo Bills quarterback Kyle Orton had an unusual game in Sunday's 43-23 win over the New York Jets, becoming the first quarterback since Bubby Brister of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1990 to throw four or more touchdown passes on 10 or fewer completions, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Orton connected on 10 of his 17 pass attempts in the blowout victory, finishing with 238 passing yards, four touchdowns and no turnovers, though he was sacked four times for a combined 25 yards.

Despite gaining just 67 yards on 32 carries, the Buffalo offense managed five touchdowns and three field goals, benefiting immensely from the Jets' six turnovers. The Bills produced just 280 total yards of offense as the Jets all but handed the game away.

Orton completed his four touchdowns to four different receivers, finding Robert Woods for 22 yards, Lee Smith for one yard, Scott Chandler for 12 yards and Sammy Watkins for 61 yards.

The 31-year-old quarterback nearly had another touchdown, as Watkins was caught on the 5-yard line in the second quarter while prematurely celebrating what would have been an 89-yard touchdown. Two plays later, fullback Frank Summers plowed into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown run.

The rookie wideout's two long receptions of 84 and 61 yards accounted for 145 of Orton's 238 passing yards, working out to 60.9 percent. With the Bills only putting up the aforementioned 280 yards of offense, Watkins' two long receptions also accounted for 51.8 percent of the team's yardage.

The type of game Orton had was far more common in the 1960s and 1970s, when teams typically attempted fewer passes but took plenty of shots deep down the field.

Of the 24 games since 1960 with four or more passing touchdowns and 10 or fewer completions, only six have taken place since 1978, while 12 occurred in the '60s alone, per Pro-Football-Reference.com's play index.
