The San Diego Chargers have been burning through running backs this season due to various injuries. Donald Brown is the most recent player to go down after suffering a concussion against the New York Jets in Week 5.
Brown was deactivated for San Diego's Week 6 game against Oakland, in which the Chargers squeaked by with a late touchdown run from Branden Oliver, per Ricky Henne of Chargers.com:
Coming over to the Chargers after spending five years in Indianapolis, Brown was struggling in his new surroundings before the injury. He is averaging 2.1 yards per carry on 59 attempts with no touchdowns. The 27-year-old was thrust into a starting role when Ryan Mathews went down with a knee injury.
Oliver entered the year buried on the depth chart but became the first player on the team to break the 100-yard mark against the Raiders in Week 6. Whenever Brown and Mathews come back, the Chargers might opt to stick with Oliver as their lead runner.
Not a lot of things have gone wrong for San Diego in starting 5-1, but its 25th-ranked rushing attack is the one thing that sticks out. Oliver is averaging 4.4 yards per carry; Mathews' 3.1 average is second on the team.
