Fozzy Whittaker, Darrin Reaves' Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 6

R. Cory SmithOct 12, 2014

Figuring out which Carolina Panthers running back to own in fantasy football has been one of the most frustrating decisions this season. With the normal tandem of Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams inactive, it was up to Fozzy Whittaker or Darrin Reaves to step up in Week 6.

Here's a look at the statistics for both players, courtesy of ESPN.com.

Neither had outstanding starts, but it was Whittaker who put up slightly better numbers thanks to a touchdown near the goal line. Desperate owners who might have started the running back were pleasantly surprised, but shouldn't expect it to be a regular occurrence.

Black & Blue Review noted how rare rushing for a touchdown is for Whittaker:

Whittaker's role was larger than Reaves' as he was also implemented in the passing game. Cam Newton leaned on the second-year back as he got his first chance to make a difference in the Panthers offense against a stout Cincinnati Bengals defense.

Reaves, on the other hand, was unable to make the most of his chances. He was only lightly used in the Panthers offense, but was easily overshadowed by his backfield mate in Whittaker.

Neither running back is a serious option for fantasy owners, but Reaves' inability to get going makes Whittaker the better add. Either way, if Williams or Stewart returns to action, their roles will be dramatically reduced.

Desperate owners ravaged with injuries to tailbacks might look at stashing either away, but neither is a promising flex play at this point. Whittaker was the better back, but Williams or Stewart will push him out of the backfield if and when they return.
