Luxembourg vs. Spain: Date, Time, Live Stream, TV Info and Preview

Gianni VerschuerenOct 11, 2014

Spain will be looking to rebound from their shock 2-1 loss to Slovakia against Luxembourg on Sunday, their third match as part of the qualification round for Euro 2016 in France.

Luxembourg are one of the football minnows of Europe, having never qualified for a major international tournament. After a tough loss in Slovakia, this is exactly the kind of opponent La Roja need.

A win won't do, however. Several players need to step up and deliver the kind of performance that inspires confidence, setting the stage for a run of results when qualification resumes with Matchday 4.

Preview

Spain's nightmare year continued against Slovakia, as the 2-1 loss marked the first time La Roja were beaten in an official qualifier since 2006. With the team already under fire for a disastrous 2014 World Cup campaign, a strong showing against Luxembourg is sorely needed.

Fans and pundits are calling for change, but as shared by ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, star midfielder Andres Iniesta believes those calls are only natural after such a difficult loss:

Chelsea's Diego Costa has taken the brunt of the blame for Spain's bad showings of late, as his fine form in the Premier League is yet to translate itself into a single goal for the national team.

ESPN FC's Sid Lowe noted Costa isn't the first top striker to struggle scoring for the Spanish team, blaming the system Vicente Del Bosque chooses to play:

"

It is not just about Costa although he is the focus this morning, 446 goalless minutes into his Spain career. Playing up front for Spain is not as easy as it looks. Costa is finding that out in the same way that Alvaro Negredo, Roberto Soldado, Fernando Llorente, Fernando Torres and Michu found that out. The difference is that, this time, others see it too. There is a willingness to analyse, explain and justify Costa's difficulties that some of his predecessors may feel they were denied. Crucially, there is a willingness to overcome them, too.

"

Luxembourg took a 5-1 pounding from Belgium in the lead-up to the World Cup, with powerful striker Romelu Lukaku abusing the overmatched defenders. Costa has the same build as the Everton man, so he could be in with a chance to break his duck on Sunday.

That is, if he still gets the chance to start. Paco Alcacer once again impressed for La Roja, netting his second goal in 76 total minutes, and publications like AS English are already asking whether or not the youngster should start over Costa:

Efficiency and ruthlessness in front of goal remain the biggest working points for the defending champions, who won't have to worry much about counter-attacks against Luxembourg.

Confidence is key for the squad right now, so expect Costa to get the opportunity to finally get off the scoring mark.

Prediction: Luxembourg 0-3 Spain
